Bowling for Columbine

This is not a film about gun control. It is a film about the fearful heart and soul of the United States, and the 280 million Americans lucky enough to have the right to a constitutionally protected Uzi. From a look at the Columbine High School security camera tapes to the home of Oscar-winning NRA President Charlton Heston, from a young man who makes homemade napalm with The Anarchist's Cookbook to the murder of a six-year-old girl by another six-year-old. Bowling for Columbine is a journey through the US, through our past, hoping to discover why our pursuit of happiness is so riddled with violence.

A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.

I haven't watched this since it first came out. With all the terrible things happening these days I thought it would be worth a rewatch.I found some parts to be a little "staged", like when Moore confronts some of the celebrities involved it seemed like drama to enhance the movie, or when he puts the picture of the little girl on Heston's front step it seemed a little insincere. But other than that a very well done documentary and a very eye opening look at mass shootings in the USA.

I'm generally an admirer of Michael Moore's work, but his film-making IQ was at a low ebb when he did Bowling for Columbine. I'm not going to spend too long expressing my disgust with Moor'e sleazy "got-ya" attack on Charleston Heston; by posing as an NRA member he cynically took and advantage of an aging man's mental confusion as Heston succumbed to Alzheimer's disease. Moore creates ridiculous fantasies, as he suggests Canadians don't bother to lock their doors at night (if Moore seriously believes that break-ins and burglaries don't occur often in Canada, he should try living in Vancouver's DTES or the North End of Winnipeg. Another ridiculous assumption is that Canada is not a nation of gun owners.Instead of doing such ridiculous comparisons of the US with Canada Moore should have chosen Japan as his field of study. Japan has the lowest rate of gun crime in the world. In 2014 there were just six gun deaths, compared to 33,599 in the US. What is the secret? If a Japanese wants to buy a gun in Japan the applicant must attend an all-day class, take a written exam and pass a shooting-range test with a mark of at least 95%. The applicant must also undergo mental health and drugs tests, a criminal record check and police will look for links to extremist groups. Then authorities check the applicant's relatives and work colleagues too. And as well as having the power to deny gun licenses, police also have sweeping powers to search and seize weapons. That's not all. Handguns are banned outright. Only shotguns and air rifles are allowed. In most of Japan's 40 or so prefectures there can be no more than three gun shops, and Japanese gun owners can only buy fresh cartridges by returning the spent cartridges from their previous visit. THAT's why Japan has near zero gun crime. Japanese culture is at the apex of human civilization, and they wisely shield their society from the influx of riff-raff from less enlightened parts of the world.

Bowling for Columbine, the comedic depiction of the gun issues that America must tackle, is a moving story about several topics that relate to gun rights, such as the Columbine Massacre in 1999. This film puts the bigger picture of gun rights and most of the political issues that our government must tackle such as weapons of mass destruction. The stats of gun incidents and gun related deaths in America help solidify the issue, as well as the act where Moore, the main actor, producer and director, take a few Columbine survivors, Mark Taylor and Richard Castaldo, to "refund" the bullets that were still in their bodies at the local K-Mart. These shocking parts really help the film display the fact that America has a domestic issue with guns and gun rights. I really enjoyed the film.

Violence is a devastating aspect of our planet. America is one of the countries containing the highest number of gun violence, poverty, and fear professor Michael Moore examines. Never has a documentary been more critical or more entertaining than "Bowling For Columbine. Tackling all the following aspect of the American society such as gun violence, gun usage, violent behavior, how gun violence interferes with poverty, the NRA, the easy access to gun violence, and more. You'll realize how gun-crazy our country is when Moore walks into a bank of all places, only to come out with a shotgun he purchased and not a deposit. I scratched my head too. What's even more alerting is the number of people so loyal to killing machines and see it as a right to own an assault riffle. Moore isn't opposing the second amendment, he's moderating it. And boy do we need moderation. The gun-nuts out there are scary. With a fascinating look as to the purpose behind the tragic Columbine massacre that left nearly twenty teenagers dead, we shrivel as to the unknown reason as to why violence even happens in our country. There are countries who have more guns than us, but hardly .01% of the crime. Moore doesn't feed you sociology textbooks like any liberal teacher, he urges you to think and begs to find a reason. That's the beauty behind this guy, he doesn't give you answers. he gives facts, interviews, and reality. Never has an interview been more tense than when Michael sits down with former NRA leader Charleton Heston and debates over the wackadoo gun popularity. Paced beautifully with some humor that destroys extreme American views, then transforming to a depressed victim of gun violence, "Bowling For Columbine" informs us on where our society is going due to the outrageously tragic amounts of violence that shape our fear and other social issues including poverty. Story after story, fight after fight (including banning bullets from K-Mart), Michael Moore is a genius of documentary filmmaking and teaching.
