I love this movie so much
Very well executed
Too much of everything
This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
Yet another movie about a really, really smart subject that could only appeal to really, really dumb people. Jason Segal as David Foster Wallace in what might be the worst casting of our lifetimes.
Two men spend time together, ostensibly for business, but each with ulterior motives which are revealed as the story progresses. The two men are David Lipsky, a reporter for Rolling Stone, and David Wallace, a writer who just wrote a critically acclaimed novel. The tension mounts as both men try to gain dominance over the other. In this case the domination is not physical but intellectual and emotional. Each call out the other's failings, fears and hypocrisy. Both become enmeshed in each other's business. Lipsky finds himself answering as many questions as he asks as Wallace finds himself going on the defensive to avoid having to deal with subjects that to him are too personal and off-bounds. Yet, defensive barriers crumble and both men are able to speak to each other with a frankness that is evidence of real friendship. This is a wonderful movie.
I haven't read any David Foster Wallace so the premise of this movie never really appealed to me. Yet when I found out it was directed by James Ponsoldt it immediately jumped to the front of my queue. His previous movie, The Spectacular Now, is one of the greatest coming of age movies I've ever seen. The End of the Tour features a lot of great dialogue, many of the conversations covering topics that reveal a lot, but hide even more. I feel like the movie is about the simple conflict of who you present to the world against who you feel you truly are. Jason Segel was amazing in this, disappearing into his role and making you forget all about his previous roles in Apatow comedies. I highly recommend this movie for anyone wishing to be challenged or who wishes to take in a great conversation starter.
This film tells the story of a music magazine journalist, who interviewed a brilliant author for a few days. Despite not knowing each other before hand, they poured their hearts out to each other.I guess I have been traumatised by the other recent film about interviewing a celebrity. Fortunately, "The End of the Tour" is nothing like "Life". "The End of the Tour" shows David Wallace in an authentic relationship with the other David. They treat others like equal and they enjoy each other's company. Their interaction appears genuine and realistic. He's so kind to even offer the journalist stay in his home. I do feel that David Wallace opened himself up to the point of being vulnerable. This relatively transient but authentic encounter is untrained by the journalist's purpose of the visit, which is an interview. It looks more like two people instantly getting along and become great friends. I enjoyed watching it.
