If you don't like this, we can't be friends.
Good movie, but best of all time? Hardly . . .
I am only giving this movie a 1 for the great cast, though I can't imagine what any of them were thinking. This movie was horrible
This is a must-see and one of the best documentaries - and films - of this year.
Probably the only film that I have watched twice in my adulthood. Set in a world where nobody knows what it is not to say the naked truth, it reveals the benefits of learning how to lie. Beyond the number of situations in which we are gaining at keeping some of the truth for ourselves, it is also about not hurting people by being too honest. I found it very entertaining, refreshing, and eventually moral.
This film has a quite ingenious plot actually: in some fantasy world, people never lie. It might be in their genes...I don't know...but somehow they always tell the truth.I think the movie is confused about the meaning of honesty and frankness/rudeness. I didn't really find it funny, I find it corny. At first it was, but in later scenes the movie became dry and witless. The characters are also unlikeable, making me disconnect with the story and movie. It feels like I'm watching robots act. Sorry to those who like this film.Just an opinion though. But this film would have been better, it even has the potential to become one of the top films ever, only if they made some changes.
I couldn't really follow the film on my first viewing because I was naming every well-known actor playing a bit part and the horrible sets - but on my second watch I realised that these sets - with modern elevators taking a long while to ascend or descend three floors - might just be meaningfully absurd. And speaking of the absurd... this is such a wonderful tale of the mythology of belief in a Judeo-Christian god. Nothingness is not an easy concept to accept and the promise of spending eternity in your own mansion with your loved ones is certainly reason to hasten one's death.Ricky Gervais brilliantly ridicules the myth-construct of these religions that surround us... and his characterisation of Jesus is hilarious.Just a wonderful and funny introduction to the world of atheism with the certainty that it takes lies to create myths and religions.
IMDb says comedy/fantasy/romance... it has elements of all 3, that's a fact, but it is not what determine this movie. I would say entertaining and occasionally funny satire of humanity, that hits some painful spots and makes you think about world we live in. It is not real comedy and definitely isn't real love movie. You can not say it is romance movie only because there are some people who fall in love in it. Still, like many times before, I think this is one fantastic idea wasted on mediocre movie. It could've been done much much better and I hope someone will try to make improved remake, cause it would be shame if this idea remains in this movie only. As much as I am amazed with the essence of the story, because of lousy realization I'll rate it 7/10.
