Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.

A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.

Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.

As a big, big fan of the anime, I must admit I had high hopes for this movie. I was overall however, left feeling disappointed. L's character may look like him but his acting is horrible, along with Light. Light's good looks, suave, and brilliant schemes aren't nearly as well portrayed in the movie either. I understand that some of the stuff needed to be cut to try and fit the anime as a movie but some scenes added(like the art gallery scene) are completely unnecessary and over the top. They also misrepresent Light's personality vs his anime personality. Watch the movie if you have time but I have a feeling most fans of the anime will be left thoroughly disappointed after watching it.

A live-action adaptation of the anime/manga 'Death Note' is not something too far-fetched. Unlike 'Dragon Ball' or 'Saint Seiya', 'Death Note' is not flashy or fight-based, being much easier to be re-enacted with real people instead of drawn ones. The story follows Light Yagami, a genius teenager who finds a Death Note: a notebook used by Shinigamis ('death gods') with the power to kill people whose name are written on it. Deciding to use the book to kill all criminals in the world and create an utopia, he ends up at odds with L, the world's greatest detective, who is tasked with finding the 'Kira' and bring him to justice. The premise is rather strange and might sound silly, but it actually develops smartly and creates many thought-provoking points for reflexion. The anime/manga is possibly one of the best ones out there, and the confrontations between Light's and L's views create a splendid philosophical discussion on the nature of good/evil. Is Light right to kill others like he is doing? To have such a power over others lives, how easy is it to cross the line of good and evil? Is there such a line at all? This film covers the first half of the story. As such, it is obviously convoluted and some of the side-plots are changed/discarded so as to keep the story's flow. The actors are good; in special, Ken'ichi Matsuyama is brilliant as L and manages to copy his mannerisms with perfection. Tatsuya Fujiwara also makes a worthwhile Light. Ryuuk, the Shinigami who gives Light the Death Note, is also present through a good use of special effects. The soundtrack is good at times too. This is definitely worth a look for 'Death Note' fans, and possibly even for those with no previous knowledge. There are some deviations from the original story, true, but nothing that hinders the quality. A nice touch was having Light read 'Beyond Good and Evil' in one scene, a perfect choice for him.

Death Note A something about Japanese which I don't know. But as far as I could understand not on the basis the actors themselves, but the concept; its good. Its akin to The Matrix, with such vivid thought behind the story and the detailing of the concept of Death Note. Though at one level it is merely a fiction ( or maybe not :P), but the story holds really good and makes sense. The good thing about fiction outside India is that it is seen for its logical coherence. So in these respects, it good. The actors, especially Light Yagami, L and the father of the protagonist have played their characters really well. The way they were directed has to be attributed to their acting also. The concept in the mind of the director would also be a part of this film. Not to put too much mind, the demerits are that it could be a bit confusing to some who are interested to follow it. It adds up well for the movie lover. The soundtrack, I guess is worth a listen since the movie got really great sounds amidst all the suspense. ON the whole, it's a film worth watch! But I would advise you not to put your mind into it but hang onto your seats. The problem is that you would certainly be forced to see the next part. Not revealing, the story because its worth a watch. Actually reflecting back, the story line is really simple, but it's the execution. This again comes back to the point that, story need not be really complex for it to gel well, but it needs to be told really nicely. I give it a 7 on 10, the points missed are just the fiction being stretched too far with the concept.
