everything you have heard about this movie is true.
I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances.
Did not like the constant close ups, the main and secondary plots, or the characters. Only watched because it was classified PG comedy and liked other Luke Wilson's performances.
Henry Poole is sad. Sad and angry. No, make that sad, angry and just a little mean. Initially, we don't know why but, naturally, we eventually find out, but EVER. SO. SLOWLY.What we do know is that he's newly arrived in a small Californian suburb where everybody knows your business, sometimes before you do - and that doesn't bode well for a man who would rather be hiding under a rock somewhere no other humans congregate.Unfortunately for poor old Henry, a miracle occurs in his backyard and his dreams of solitude are shattered but, in exchange, he gains something so much more valuable; redemption, freedom and the ability to smile again. There's no doubt this is a beautiful film, one that is lovingly shot and sympathetically cast, however it sits smack damn in the middle of the road between being a wonderful, heartwarming tear-jerker filled with poignant life lessons and a rather average, overly slow, wannabe lesson on the power of faith. If you've ever been sad or lonely or just felt a little hopeless (and who hasn't?), you'll probably enjoy it - or at the very least be thinking of it - and grumpy old Henry - long after you watch this film.
Mark Pellington's 'Henry Poole Is Here' could have easily become just another one of those 'depressed loner finds hope in company' films but even though the story isn't particularly original, it is Mark Pellington's treatment of Torres's script and Torres's writing that really make this film standout from the usual. Just to get this out of the way, religion is a key theme but one doesn't have to be religious to enjoy this film (many atheists seem to have liked this too). The key theme of 'Henry Poole Is Here' is hope, that even at the worst of times when everything appears pointless, hope can make that much-needed difference in someone's life. The writing is solid. Much of the film is dialogue driven. The dialogues themselves are loaded with some clever humour and interesting philosophy. Moreover, I like it when a lot could be said with a few words. The characters are quite well developed. Even the minor ones are very well defined.Given the themes, this could have easily been just another special effects dominated flick, but I liked that Pellington managed to avoid that by keeping it simple. Instead, fine use is made of Eric Schmidt's cinematography, especially in the sequences where the camera is in motion. The soundtrack is likable. Although it could have been slightly toned down in places. Lighting is excellent. The performances are brilliant. Luke Wilson does a first rate job. Ditto for Radha Mitchell. Child actress Morgan Lilly is good too, especially in the scenes where she's doing the talking with non-verbal gestures. Adriana Barraza is superb as Henry's religious and kind neighbour. Rachel Seifert too does a brilliant job in a small role. Cheryl Hines provides good support. This may not be a one of a kind movie but it's nice to watch a feel good engaging film that reminds us what's important and lift ones spirit.
This is one of those movies that didn't necessarily hit the mainstream market, but it has a lot of spiritual and emotional power. Completely left me feeling better than when I started. Luke Wilson drew me in because I like him as an actor and probably would watch most anything stars in. But the story is first the troubles of the character and how he reacts to it. Anyone with or without faith may find this interesting, even if they don't have a spiritual home. It does send a powerful message. I loved it. Well, it looks like I need 10 more lines of text so here goes . . . potential spoiler. Luke's protagonist is found and believed to be dying, his neighbors find a miracle on the wall of his new house. The neighbors are amazing and there's a lot of faith based story in this movie. I am so glad Luke Wilson took this role, otherwise I would have missed on the opportunity to watch this wonderful film. I will watch it again . . . and I thought it has a spectacular ending!
