Highly Overrated But Still Good
Fantastic!
Entertaining from beginning to end, it maintains the spirit of the franchise while establishing it's own seal with a fun cast
It uses a lot of puns; the hotel 'major' reference will leave you rolling. This movie doesn't beat you over the head with unrealistic comedy, nor does it over-explain the jokes, some of the humor is quite subtle. The younger crowd who love Seth Rogan-type movies will not 'get' this movie. Yet, Gambit is well written, and is a fun romp of witty entertainment. Alan Rickman (rip) was great as well as all the cast. BTW - they actually do have dog-riding cowmonkeys in Texas rodeos:).
Gambit is a tepid and disappointing remake written by the Coen Brothers who have rendered it as a farce and an unfunny one at that.Harry Deane (Colin Firth) is an art curator for nasty businessman Lionel Shahbandar (Alan Rickman) who has a low opinion of Deane.Deane decides to cheat Shahbandar by getting his old art forger pal Major Wingate (Tom Courtenay) to fake a 'lost' Monet painting that has been discovered in a trailer in Texas. Deane recruits an accomplice from America PJ (Cameron Diaz) who is feisty and someone Deane becomes attracted to.Firth goes back to the default posh English repressed nerd that he used to play in the moderately budgeted US co-productions before he won his Best Actor Oscar. Now he has got an Oscar there was no need for him to appear in such a movie. I guess he wanted to work with the Coens and look like Michael Caine.
"Gambit" from 2012 is okay - it's a remake from the '60s Gambit starring Michael Caine and Shirley Maclaine.Firth plays an art expert who loathes his boss (Alan Rickman) and decides to cheat him by getting him to buy a fake Monet. In this version, his partner is not a Hong Kong dancer but a good ol' girl from Texas, played by Cameron Diaz. This is a surprising film from the Coen brothers, who are usually more edgy and darkly funny. This movie really just comes off as silly. Colin Firth is slightly miscast though as usual he's excellent. I agree with one review in that Hugh Grant would have been a better choice.Alan Rickman is the horrible boss and is perfect, and Stanley Tucci is fun as Firth's competitor, a German art expert. Well-acted, this is a fun movie that would have been dreck with a lesser cast.
Gambit follows a man who seeks to get revenge on his employer by messing with his massive, and expensive, art collection. The best part of the movie was the hotel scene. I'm not going to say much more, but it's pretty hilarious, and the whole movie is kind of worth it just for that one scene. The rest of the movie is just fine. The acting is fine, the characters are pretty fun, but not too compelling, and the comedy is only good during the hotel scene really. It's enjoyable but also nothing special. Overall Gambit is a fun movie to watch, but that's about it. In the end I probably wouldn't recommend it.
