Good movie but grossly overrated
It was OK. I don't see why everyone loves it so much. It wasn't very smart or deep or well-directed.
what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
Never heard of this film, and here in 2018 I came across it on a streaming service. I decided to give it a watch because of the cast - some of my favorites including Jeff Daniels, Ryan Reynolds and Lisa Kudrow. Emma Stone is quite special in her role as a young lady with so many cares in this world. Jeff Daniels is at his very disarming best, I think. I laughed out loud many a time, mostly with Captain Excellent (oh Ryan, you have such great comic timing). If you've ever felt a bit lost in life and wondered what now, I think you'll find kindred spirits in this lovely film.
Richard Dunn (Jeff Daniels) still talks to his imaginary superhero friend Captain Excellent (Ryan Reynolds). He is a blocked writer and his wife Claire (Lisa Kudrow) moves him out to Long Island for the winter. He befriends local teen Abby (Emma Stone) despite his imaginary friend's disapproval. She has a brutish boyfriend Bryce and a best friend stalker in Christopher (Kieran Culkin).Emma Stone is endearing and has a funny chemistry with Jeff Daniels. Kieran Culkin is also great. His character works unlike Captain Excellent which is the big problem in the movie. He is unnecessary and more of a distraction than anything helpful. He isn't actually funny. The movie is better off without him. Even the ending would work better without him because the twist is too obvious with Captain Excellent around.
Some people may find this movie to be raw and very dry, but that's what I find beautiful about it. Last year I had a chorus teacher who was a father to me. He taught me so much about life and to pursue your dream and to never let anyone take anyway your passion. Eventually, the school made the mistake of making him resign. The concept of "Paper Man" reminds me of him so much. It shows how people can come and go in your life, but their impact stays with you your whole life. Jeff Daniels character left a part of himself with Emma Stone's character. Sometimes a goodbye in life is what you need to push you to your next step and to really show you what love is. This is an absolutely beautiful movie and I highly recommend it.
This was a very touching romantic film with an atypical story line--no wonder it made so little at the box office. :( It wasn't obscene or predictable or full of CGI, just actors who did an incredible job including my favorite Jeff Daniels (also an amazing stage actor) and Emma Stone and Ryan Reynolds. Well worth watching. I could so relate to some of the scenes of Jeff Daniels. Been there done that. We can really screw up but still in the end feel selfless love, which I believe is the main theme. Although the actors obviously really cared about their work in the film, there were a few times where reactions didn't seem quite fitting to the situation, and there was some lack of character development in minor characters. Some characters seem to be just a bit too unrealistically pathetic and thus unsympathetic (not believable characters). Emma Stone is thoroughly enchanting and sensual and believable. Its romantic minus a lot of the pain as it is imbued with a greater sense or philosophy of life, and not offensive or raunchy like so many modern romantic comedies. Dreamy. Well paced.
