Just perfect...
This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
It's a good bad... and worth a popcorn matinée. While it's easy to lament what could have been...
Watching it is like watching the spectacle of a class clown at their best: you laugh at their jokes, instigate their defiance, and "ooooh" when they get in trouble.
I really struggle with this movie. Being traumatised as a 9 year old when the show was cancelled I can remember the sheer excitement at there being a movie. It starts off well enough, I really enjoyed Sylvester McCoy's appearance, at least he got a send off.Paul McGann made a really good Doctor, I feel sad for him that he wasn't given a true crack of the whip, he showed us in The Night of the Doctor what we'd missed all those years. He performs as well as can be expected. I even quite liked Grace (not the kissing bit!!)But, oh my days it's so tacky, Eric Roberts as the Master?? Seriously!! I don't know why they didn't hire Dom DeLuise and have him in drag, well they weren't that far off were they. The story itself isn't uninteresting, but gang crimes, guns etc it's not what this show was about, were they aiming this movie at the American market? The Doctor being half human? I should coco!!Overall it's watchable enough, at least they tried to get it to work, it's just a bit too cheesy and glitzy. 5/10
A blight on my childhood and a travesty compared to the original, classic DOCTOR WHO TV series. I remember - fondly - watching the Sylvester McCoy stories when I was a kid, and I was 15 when this TV movie premiered on television. I expected a lot; what I got was the worst kind of nonsense, a film as offensive as it was bland.Where to begin with the problems? McCoy himself is given short shrift early on, to be replaced by the uninteresting Paul McGann who never makes the role his own; sometimes he appears to think he's in a pantomime, so lazy is his performance. Then there's the narrative, which adopts some kind of nonsensical action-movie template instead of the usual intricate plotting of a proper Dr Who story. The blame for all this can be laid at the door of the producers, who decided to appeal to the American audience in an attempt to break the American market. So this was filmed in Canada with a mostly American cast, and it completely misses the boat in terms of the feel of a Dr Who adventure. Instead, we get blatant rip-offs and homages to tons of American cultural icons: dodgy liquid metal CGI effects copied from TERMINATOR 2, Eric Roberts playing the Master and dressing as Arnie from THE TERMINATOR, plus pointless comparisons to Universal's FRANKENSTEIN.And that's the gutting thing. If this had just been a typical cheesy US B-movie, I wouldn't have minded as much; I've seen plenty of bad 'uns, after all. The fact that it's masquerading as WHO is what makes me seethe, and yes, I still hate it just the same all these years later. It's a horrible travesty, and something I still couldn't get off my TV screen quickly enough.
First of all: I am a mega Who fan, and would never want to diminish the awesomeness that is Doctor Who, but; these are still my opinions: While I have watched the movie twice purely out of loving Doctor Who (and trying to grasp the personality of the eighth incarnation), I do not LOVE this movie. First of all, America should have never tried to revive a purely British Sci-Fi show in the first place. (I'm American myself, and even I think this was a bad idea!) They literally urinated all over the character of both The Doctor, and the Master. Okay, to make this review simpler, I will do pros/cons.Pros (or "good things" about the movie):Paul McGann. Paul McGann wonderfully portrayed a sexy, suave Doctor. He was gorgeous, and brilliant. The Master. Once he stole a human body (*eye rolling*), he was pretty Master-y. Even stopping to dress up when so he could look the part to steal the Doctor's body or lives or whatever. The companions. Grace Holloway and Chang Lee were fun characters. A surgeon and a street thug were pretty good ideas to pair up with our favorite Time Lord.Cons (or "bad things" about the movie):Half-Human: The eighth incarnation is apparently half human? First of all, they never fully explain that crap. (It might not have been a terrible idea if they would have.) It was unnecessary, and not well done.Snot-Snake ghost crap: So the Master has all his lives taken away (haha cool punishment!), but yet is magically able to become a snot looking snaking ghost and break out of his little grave and possess someone, LITERALLY. This was never explained, since he wasn't shown to be able to that before! (Also, he has quite a bit stronger psychic abilities than I have ever seen a Time Lord have. The Eye of Harmony: New TARDIS part, I think. But nevertheless, I wished they would have just used the heart of the TARDIS as the plot device that The Master opened instead of adding that. It didn't make a ton of sense in the story and fell pretty flat with me. (Even Steven Moffat had negative comments about this and The Master snake of snot ability thing!)Seven-to-Eight: Seven's regeneration was kind of cool, but, shooting the Doctor to kill him off? Well shooting which caused a surgery and what not, but still.. That kind of craps on one of the most entertaining staples of the show! (The Doctor's ability to make whimsical speeches to get out of trouble.) Overall, not the best way to regenerate The Doctor:/Anyhow, those are my opinions. Sorry if I offended any Whovians! I still like the movie, but I just don't quite LOVE it. Also, I post Doctor Who on Instagram! Follow me if you would like: my user is: November23rd1963.
"It was a request they should never have granted" The time the American's made Doctor Who. But was it worth it? Yes. Although it took SEVEN YEARS to make, it turned out to be one of the most pivotal stories in the history of the series: Time Lords, action chases, love scenes and death, destruction and disaster facing the universe on New Year's Eve 1999. With two Doctors, an old enemy and another now-alone Doctor (this one's from San Fransisco), this 90-minute TV Movie is possibly, to fans or casual viewers, either excellent or rubbish. However, with the graphic CGI and first-time orchestration of the historical theme tune, and stunning performances by Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann (the Doctors), Daphne Ashbrook (Dr. Grace Holloway), and particularly Eric Roberts's portrayal as the Master, this TV Movie, although seen by only 9 Million people in the UK (despite there being no new WHO for seven years!)on original broadcast on Monday 23 May, 1996. With this year commemorating 50 Years of the series, and the 16th Annversary of the TV Movie, this 90 minute special surely is a testament to the greatest show in the galaxy: DOCTOR WHO!
