Foolproof

Kevin, Sam and Rob have an unusual hobby: planning foolproof heists, without intending to actually perform them. The game goes wrong when their latest plan is stolen and carried out. Things get even worse when a mysterious man approaches them with an offer: plan a heist for him, or go to jail. As the clock ticks, they find that the risk might be higher than just their freedom.

It was a good idea, with good symbolism, with some excellent actors, but with a contrived Story. It started out as 'Ocean's 11' and just got more contrived until it was practically fantasy at the end. It was fun...if you didn't take it too seriously and just said:"eh...so what?". The movie is actually so good and so bad at the same time. It's because this movie exhibits the best and the worst qualities that we get passionately critical of it. It's like taking a '71 Hemi'cuda and painting it with a roller. Some of the acting was excellent and David Suchet blew my mind as 'Leo Gillette'. The intensity of that character kept me on the edge of my seat. The use of symbolism was a tasty touch as well. Unfortunately, Ryan Reynold's character; Kevin wasn't fully-realized and all exchanges between the two just seemed wrong. Van Wilder just didn't realize enough of his own talent potential at the time of this production. One of my own bug bears is weapon use. In this movie, Leo fired a .45 cal Glock like it was a cap gun; 5 shots (or so). He had "No idea" that he was firing blanks. He never even suspected. I've fired a .45 pistol. That thing is a beast! Blanks? Not even in the same postal code. How about falling 40+ floors and still being alive. I hate to be graphic but not only would you be dead...you would be in many pieces... non of which would have the intact bones to hold up a gun. Modern (within the last 40 years) elevators also have 4 independent brakes to prevent free fall. None of which occurred to this "Mastermind" and to the protagonists who predicted his elaborate plan to destroy them. In the end, the three turn the tables on Leo and run off with the diamonds with nary a care in the world. I'm sorry but Leo is 'Hannibal Lector' in everything but diet. A set of bars wouldn't make me feel safe enough. Maybe get a major tan and go live with a tribe in the Amazon?

Three friends Kevin (Ryan Reynolds), Sam (Kristin Booth) and Rob (Joris Jarsky) play a game they call Foolproof. They plan out every details of a heist without actually doing it. Then somebody actually executed their latest plan. And on top of that, they are blackmailed by the real thief Leo 'The Touch' Gillette (David Suchet). This is a Canadian production trying to play in the big leagues. The biggest problem may have been a lack of A-list talent. Ryan Reynolds is definitely the big star here. Kristin Booth is cute and sassy but she's certainly not a big name. Then there is the writer/director William Phillips. His only previous credits are nothing more than indies. So it's no surprise that this felt more like a B-movie with a bit of money to spend. It's still quite watchable with Ryan having a bit of fun.

Being Canadian I am extremely embarrassed by most Canadian movies and was cringing when this one started. What you get instead is a tight, well written and reasonably well acted (Ryan Reynolds... NOT) heist movie, as a group of three friends who devise intricate robbery plans for a hobby are suddenly force-recruited by the criminal elite of Toronto (don't laugh - we got mafia too) to pull off their latest crime scenario for real.Naturally, with the intelligence in the group you know they will turn the tables, but the fun is trying to figure out how they do it, which the movie does a reasonable job of keeping hidden until the end. There are some predictable gaffs along the way, like the excruciatingly long time they take to get under some security lasers when they have already shown they are skilled enough to have just turned them off, and the fact that if your going to fake your own death, you really need to know ahead of time how the bad guy is going to do it so you can plan it! How exactly did they know he was going to drop the elevator on them? He wouldn't have told Rob ahead of time as he might tell them! All in all very well written, look for some great acting from Kristin Booth as the super sexy ninja-girl and William House as the sinister mobster crime boss trapping them in the plan.Do NOT watch Ryan Reynolds, this guy should go back to modelling.
