Wow! Such a good movie.
Better Late Then Never
A different way of telling a story
This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
This is a strange movie. It has better much better production value than the standard Netflix 'Blair Witch' ripoff, shaky cam garbage. I think what they were going for a slow burn, atmosphere heavy, modern Gothic feel. There's some nice direction and art direction here but the over all feel is that of a Hallmark Channel production. The main villain has WAY too much screen time to be effective and while he's one of my favorite actors from 'Deadwood', he is not a very frightening baddie. The 'house' at the end looks like the CGI creation it is, very jumbled and fake looking instead of terrifying. The ending is pure Deus Ex Machina and very unsatisfying. This really could have been something good had the script been a little stronger and the production budget a little higher. Still I applaud the makers for not taking the easy way out and attempting an actual MOVIE instead of giving us more Netflix fodder.
This is the kind of movie that a select type of viewer will really appreciate. At the risk of perhaps not liking it very much, you may indeed be one of few who will love what this movie has to offer. At first I thought the movie was falling quite flat, but I stuck with it because slowly the plot began to unravel and bring up more questions than answers. If you want a film that is willing to do it's own thing, and take it all the way, you will be pleased with Abattoir.
I admit to being a fan of Mr.Bousman and I have always found his style interesting from camera angles to getting the most bang for his buck on limited budgets. Abattoir is perhaps one of his most stylish, from the cinematography to the shading. I kept having this feeling it was an X-file eerie, engrossing visceral. If you watch 11/11, The Barrens and this ft his film there is no doubt he has become a true master of horror. I think you should see this film the technical aspects are a real accomplishment. Lynn Shays has become a horror staple but she always delivers memorable performances and does so again with a strange love hate schizo lady that will surely creep you out.
9/10 LOVED IT! Some may find this too slow a burn at first but once it gets started Abattoir is a unique and enjoyable experience. I liked this movie for a few reasons. One of them being that the director didn't try to copy anyone in his attempts at crossing genres while combining themes from decades all throughout the 20th century until today. If you're a true film lover and have the patience to let this film get going, the second and third act and especially the end will certainly be worth it. This movie delivers an original, refreshing idea not yet scene in the mystery/thriller/horror genre(s). With the level of visual quality and production value overall t looks like this movie was made for $10M. Can't wait for the sequel.
