Best movie of this year hands down!
One of my all time favorites.
This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
There are some in this world who say that with certain movies you have to turn a blind eye to a certain aspect of what makes a movie. For example those people say that when you watch transformers don't expect Shakespeare and just watch the explosions and nice CG.Even though I dislike mindless movies like transformers, the sheer quality of work done by the respective cg artists makes it barely watchable. This movie doesn't have any strong points, none whatsoever: - the CG is terrible (badly animated daz3d stockmodels - story unappealing....if you like Egyptian gods in a "modern setting" watch stargate, if you want to see an existential movie watch the 5th element or better yet the matrix. - bad acting..in defense of the actors i would like to add that even robert de niro could not make this movie workI saw another review here saying that you should watch or read other stuff this Erik Bilal has made in order to appreciate this movie...my advice would be not to, there are far better comic book/graphic novelists out there I am pretty sure of it...so if this movie gave you a head ache like it did with me..just stop watching.I would rather watch static noise on TV than this..really it is that bad
I did not know anything about this movie. I just bought discounted low price DVD of this movie from Stockholm and I was really positively surprised and I enjoyed every moment watching it. The story and also visual side of the movie impressed me. I am huge fan of Sci-Fi movies and Immortal will definitely belong into my personal top 10. This movie of course does not have so good technical effects like for example Avatar and etc, but the story is much better and will leave many questions open which gives chance for audience to use their own imagination. I think Immortal is masterpiece which has been unfortunately underestimated and I urge everybody who is still hesitating - watch this movie, you will not regret.
I recently came across this film by accident. When I was a kid I was completely entranced by the graphic novels by Enki Bilal, so I was exited by the prospect of a movie based on the Nikopol Trilogy. I didn't get far into "Immortal" before I started to get really disappointed and disillusioned. The film tries to mix CGI that would be somewhat acceptable in a computer game with live acting-- its not the admittedly poor blend that is the main problem, but the artistic quality of most of the CGI and the often shoddy voice acting. It reminds me of the Star Wars prequels, which I didn't fancy at all... But "immortal" is far worse. You can't redeem this movie by saying that it is deep, not for children, and so on. In this film, you don't get the story because its poorly told. To be frank, the execution of the script, and perhaps the script itself are a disaster. There's a difference between a botch and something that is inexplicable in an artistic way like "Mulholland Drive" by David Lynch. As a film-maker, Enki Bilal just doesn't have his act together. Watching "Immortal" is a twofold torture, because Bilal is desecrating his own work while at the same time making an extremely poor movie that is mostly boring and sometimes even excruciating to watch. The scenes when the main character of the film is first possessed by Horus are very good, but this somehow makes "Immortal" even worse, because it reminds you of the fact that this film could have been something great. For me, this film was one of those rare ones that actually made me feel a tiny bit worse about life and art in general.
I enjoy most SF and fantasy fare, and am always happy to make allowances for rough edges and failings where a film seems to deserve such indulgence. However, it would be unnecessarily generous to imply that Immortel ad Vitam is anything other than rubbish. It's overblown and tedious and it offers nothing that you have not seen done better in countless other films. Anyone who is familiar with the works of Philip K Dick, Frank Herbert and Roger Zelazny will see just how much shameless ripping-off is going on here, and (my only real complaint about this) how badly such material is being wasted. The same could be said of the excellent Charlotte Rampling.
