Such a frustrating disappointment
Memorable, crazy movie
The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
So, hubby decides to divorce wifey. Wifey then goes to her mother's place for vacation with her son and daughter and on the same day, the exact same day; son meets girl, daughter meets boy and mother is "met" by man. Some days later in the movie, again, on the same day... Mother has sex with man, daughter has sex with boy and son makes out with girl.Later in the movie, mother and kids move into mommy's/grandmommy's house, where, all three love interests are available and oh so ready and willing to be of some assistance.Meanwhile, boy kills deer in front of daughter and completely disregards her feelings, then he later tells her that's her problem. She then, instead of forgiving him, which she still shouldn't do, because she is not wrong, rather, introspects and faults herself. While again meanwhile, man slept with the mother of the mother; aka grandmama, and didn't make this known (actually he didn't tell, she found out; thus, he continually lied) until he slept with the mother of the kids. He then accuses mother of always fighting with everyone. Mother then does exactly what her daughter did. Looks within, blames herself pretty much, and seemingly takes man back.Mother, son and daughter with all their love interests, whom they all acquainted, the same day, then live happily ever after.Mmmkay, sure.
Three talented actresses (Jane Fonda, Catherine Keener and Elizabeth Olsen) provided the drive for this over-simplistic view of intergenerational differences and the search for happiness. While clichés abound, the plots twists can be seen miles away but yet occur in the blink-of-an-eye without any rationalization, and the characters border on being one- dimensional, this movie is a guilty pleasure. I would probably credit the ability to overcome this movie's weaknesses to the acting skills and the on-screen charisma of Ms. Fonda and Ms. Keener. The male characters are even more one-dimensional than the female leads. The only person to get less to do than the abandoning husband (Kyle MacLachlan) is the talented Patricia Arquette who may have only 1 or 2 lines in the movie which require a double take to confirm her presence. I suspect that post-production was not kind to whatever other dialog must have been originally written for her. While the movie has many weaknesses, the stellar soundtrack and magnificent cinematography are not among them.Clocking in at barely over 90 minutes, I would recommend this movie to those who do not mind a little fluff every now and then. Free-spirited Moms and daughters story. I enjoyed the simple message of "each to his own". The Woodstock references and various musicians together with Jane Fonda (who lived it) are fun. The different love stories are contemporary and delightfully portrayed. This is no big movie with an incredible plot, it is just life! If you throw out any cynicism you hold you will enjoy it. Jane Fonda is simply beautiful, and I personally enjoyed the gorgeous 2 main male characters, just because. The guidelines for reviews says don't pad the review with junk words - I am not sure what that means if I read what I have written so far. I only want to say, it is a well presented movie with some delightful actors and a believable story-line.
If you lack motivation or simply are looking for relaxation, you'll like Peace, Love & Misunderstanding. There is nothing groundbreaking in it, nevertheless, the cast delivers an excellent performance. It goes to the extent that even the actors that might annoy you don't bother you throughout the movie. There is a lot of stereotyping here, but i didn't expect anything else from a romantic comedy involving hippies in Woodstock in the year 2011. Jane Fonda looks like a grandma every teenager would love to have, adorable despite all the escapades. She was the only reason i saw Peace, Love & Misunderstanding and i liked the way Barbarella had aged...
