The Salt of the Earth

During the last forty years, the photographer Sebastião Salgado has been travelling through the continents, in the footsteps of an ever-changing humanity. He has witnessed the major events of our recent history: international conflicts, starvations and exodus… He is now embarking on the discovery of pristine territories, of the wild fauna and flora, of grandiose landscapes: a huge photographic project which is a tribute to the planet's beauty. Instead, you get a movie that's enjoyable enough, but leaves you feeling like it could have been much, much more.

The acting is good, and the firecracker script has some excellent ideas.

All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.

Impressive! My jaws dropped, my eyes opened wide and my heart ached as I watched these stunning images taken by veteran photographer Sebastião Salgado. It hits more as he explains the background under which he took those pictures. Born in Brazil, he is more than a photographer, a photojournalist, an anthropologist, an adventurer, a loving husband and a father. He is a humanist who shows us the world through his lens and the emotions he captured and feelings awed. He is also very lucky to have a wife who supports his dream and passion. They plan and work together to build massive projects which let Sebastião away from home for lengths spanning from month to years. Looking at his pictures, we are like traveling in time and space while freezing at certain moments. The feminine, the skeletons, the piles of corpses, the hollow eyes of young refugees, the massive camps like ants against the beautiful backdrop of the African savana, the determination of a little boy who walked to flee expulsion. Then the workers, the Indians and Siberian tribe braving snow storms, the Nenets who live near the Arctic Circle and the polygamous Zo'é who wear a wood stick under their chin. Fascinating! What is valuable is Sebastião explains the situations under which he took the pictures and how the situations still haunt him or move him. The pictures are stunning. The photographer's life is equally interesting. He is so honest and humble in showing how much he cares about humankind, the earth and his own family. After witnessing the sufferings on different continents, his project came one full circle to Genesis as he explored the earth, its wildlife and untouched human civilizations as it has started from the beginning of time. We saw his humbleness towards nature and animals as he described his journey. In the end, he himself came one big circle and return to Brazil to replant trees in his father's farm which had dried out for decades. After a decade, shades re-emerged and even the jaguar returned to the forest. Sebastião was hopeful that the waterfall he saw when he was a boy would eventually return. Quite a realization after traveling around all corners of the world and starting to appreciate the very basics. I think we should all learn from him to respect nature – both the wild and human. I watched it twice in three years and I would watch it again if I have a chance. Highly recommend.

This was nominated for the Oscars, but did not win. I should have watched it earlier, but I don't know how I forgot it and moved on. Recently noticed that I've missed it, so finally gave it a try and I really liked, but very sad to learn what the film narrated. This is a biopic, an aged photographer who traveled world revealed his experience with those horrifying encounters the humanity ever saw. From South America to Europe and Africa to Pacific Asia, he takes us back to the 70s, 80s and the 90s. His pictures tell us all the story, but when he explain more surround those pictures when he had taken them, that's where not just me, anybody who sees this documentary would be heartbroken.Initially I thought it was just a photo exhibition from the past 40- 50 years of his life, but after the opening few minutes, it kicked off from Brasil to the different parts of the world, like how people suffered from our own mistakes. Also the nature like the oil fields in Iraq, polar and sea animals, tribes, all are very fascinating, as well as upsets with the facts that causing all those troubles. Before watching this I thought it might tell about actual salt of the Earth, the chemistry, to brief its past, present and future. But what the film revealed was shocking and at a time, thanks for being very bold, for the present world, it definitely needed. This is just one man's experience, we don't know what might have happened behind when there is no camera to capture the moment and to tell the story to the rest of the world. A must see film, a documentary film like this is never late to see, even if it takes a lifetime to watch, you must take that chance and do that before you die. I have seen lots of documentaries like this, but this is not a message deliverer, it just finger pointed to our mistakes. You will learn some of the history that you ever learnt from your school, college textbooks or from your own journey around the world. So definitely these pictures are priceless. Not to admire, but to remind not to repeat in the future. I hope you watch it right away after reading my review.8/10

I was pleasantly surprised to see 'The salt of the Earth' in the documentary movie collection of the United Airlines. This is a documentary about legendary photographer Sebastiao Salgado and his life's work.Started with an excited heart, it left me heartbroken in the end. It's amazing how a man saw so much war, loss of lives and cruelty but still believes in humans. Every book he has published is product of a grueling journey of years - each of those books completely transformed him. This is what photography is supposed to be. I wonder how many photographers nowadays have such dedication.

"We are a ferocious animal. We humans are terrible animals. Our history is a history of wars. It's an endless story, a tale of madness." – Sebastião SalgadoDirected by Wim Wenders and Juliano Ribeiro Salgado this documentary goes through the life of the photographer Sebastião Salgado, from its childhood times in Minas Gerais until his current role as an activist and founder of Instituto Terra. Not following the typical poetic and metaphorical style, and sometimes pretentious, that characterizes Wim so much, this documentary follows a simple line, however it's not a light viewing. In fact, it's hard, graphic and even chocking in some parts. Divided between the outside interpretations of Wim and Juliano, they reckon their perspectives were complemented with each other's, Juliano as son of Sebastião and Wim as the outside look, admirer of Salgado's work. But it's when Sebastião analyzes its photographs, the highlight of the film, that we realize who he really is and what he testified, transporting us into an incredible journey of anger, despair and hope.
