Throw Momma from the Train
Larry Donner, an author with a cruel ex-wife, teaches a writing workshop in which one of his students, Owen, is fed up with his domineering mother. When Owen watches a Hitchcock classic that seems to mirror his own life, he decides to put the movie's plot into action and offers to kill Larry's ex-wife, if Larry promises to murder his mom. Before Larry gets a chance to react to the plan, it seems that Owen has already set things in motion.

Best movie of this year hands down!

Excellent and certainly provocative... If nothing else, the film is a real conversation starter.
Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
A lighter reworking of Alfred Hitchcock's suspense classic, Strangers on a Train, Throw Momma from the Train with Billy Crystal and Danny DeVito is a black comedy that's all fun and entertaining though terribly morbid. It's dauntlessly funny, terrific at making light with dark material and having fun with it, and in doing such, it's a delightful viewing.Billy Crystal is the tops, really, I mean that, the tops playing the going wacky Larry who is a teacher of a small writing class and Danny DeVito is the greatest, really, I mean that, the greatest playing the fully deranged Owen who is a student in Larry's said writing class. Larry hates his ex-wife's guts, Owen wants his momma dead, so both Larry and Owen scheme up a plan, a criss-cross murder plot to take out one another's most despised persons so to make it look like that the crimes were committed by complete strangers, or at least that's what Owen thought. The plot of Throw Momma from the Train unfolds consistently nice and comically. It has a writer's perspective that especially speaks to writers but offers an interesting insight for all audiences. Throw Momma from the Train has a marvelous and creative camera lens, thanks to Danny Devito, really enhancing the showing of the story. Danny Devito did so well in his movie directorial debut. He has real directing talent! I'm just learning this!Despite of its potentially disturbing premise, it's not, and I really love Throw Momma from the Train and it's actually quite nice. In the end, all's well that ends well. The night was humid. The night was sultry. Hahahahaahaa!
Owen is a little nuts. His mother drove him there. Larry is distraught. His ex-wife stole his award winning manuscript. Owen wants Larry to do a little favor for him Larry wants his life back. So begins one of the classic comedies of modern times. Excellently done in all aspects with absolutely nothing lacking. If you are a writer if you have ever been screwed over by a girl if you had a dominating bitch of a mother if you love Woody Allen movies you will LOVE this movie. The chemistry of this brew that makes it all work is casting, writing, direction, and TALENT! Something sadly lacking from most modern movies. Stu Silver wrote the TV sitcom "Soap" in which Billy Crystal also starred, so Silver's framed sampler-worthy lines are perfect for Crystal as Larry Donner, a writing class professor whose ex-wife has done him dirty. DeVito is perfect for his role as the harried Owen Lift son of the queen of all bitter controlling mothers. Unlike most movies there is not one square peg in the cast. Anne Ramsey makes the whole plot believable. It is hard to imagine the movie being so "right" with any other actress.Silver never forgets the cardinal rule of comedies you never mix genres for the purity of a perfectly crafted movie. Serious danger does not belong in a comedy. You may take the audience on a roller coaster ride while making them laugh, but you never let the coaster leave the tracks. Everybody gets back safely for another ride in an amusement park and this is an amusement park ride of "E" ticket quality!
Throw Momma from the Train (1987) *** (out of 4) Dark comedy is a take off Hitchcock's STRANGERS ON A TRAIN. A writer (Billy Crystal) has his idea for a book stolen by his ex-wife who turns it into a major hit. He wishes he could kill her but his student (Danny DeVito) takes his talk serious and kills her in exchange that the writer kills his nagging mother (Anne Ramsey). With the talent involved this film should have been a whole lot better and even though there are countless flaws, in the end I can't help but find the film mildly entertaining, if disappointing. I think the biggest problem with the film is that there's way too much plot for a 88-minute comedy. We have so many double-crosses, plot twists and side plots that you could take them and use them in two or three movies. I think the film would have been a lot better had some of the plot been taken out and replaced with more laughs, which is one thing this comedy could have used more of. What does work is the chemistry between Crystal and DeVito. Both men really dig into their roles and turn in fine performances but they are both letdown by the screenplay. One of the first scenes involves Crystal suffering from writer's block and trying to complete the same line over and over. This scene goes on way too long. What does work is the early banter between the two actors as DeVito's character is constantly showing up at bad times wanting to know if Crystal enjoyed his bad stories. There's a very funny sequence when the two are discussing the so called "plan" that was only in DeVito's mind. Ramsey, who many will remember from THE GOONIES, turns in a nice, foul-mouthed performance and you can't help but love to hate her. Her relationship with DeVito, while mean-spirited, is also quite touching in a few scenes. Again, there's a lot wrong with this film but I think the three leads have enough going to carry the weak screenplay a lot further than it deserves.
Had it with the one who raised you since when you were young? You just want her gone from your life? That woman is your mother. You should respect her, you should honor her, whether she's in sick or well. But that in times, it can be aggravating. Especially when she becomes very overbearing. That's how Owen(Danny DeVito) had to deal with in "Throw Momma Fron The Train". His Momma(Anne Ramsey, 1929-88), is one of the worst. He trying his best to be a writer, and she is everything but grateful. Calls him a "clumsy poop", a "larda$$", and "fat" and "stupid". For his friend, Larry Donner(Billy Crystal) he has his own woman problems, his ex-wife. She trying to discredit him. So what did Owen do? Push her overboard. What does he do? Help return the favor, get rid of Mrs. Lift! In the kitchen scene, I liked it where Owen called Larry, "Cousin Patty". And Momma said, "You don't have a Cousin Patty!" and Owen shouts "You Lied To Me!" and El Cabongs Larry with the frying pan. Then comes the fun part when they where on the train and try to kill Momma Lift. That is thwarted, and she kicks Larry off the train. Well, everything back to normal, the ex-wife lives, but Momma kicked the bucket on her own. Maybe she should have seen the errors of her domineering ways. A fun movie it is, and the cast is great. A classic! 5 stars!
