I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
Good story, Not enough for a whole film
I wanted to like it more than I actually did... But much of the humor totally escaped me and I walked out only mildly impressed.
Excellent and certainly provocative... If nothing else, the film is a real conversation starter.
A lot of plots just keep getting written all over again. This is a story about a guy who is down on his luck. He moves in with someone, in this case his sister and her son. He wins their affection and does something to abuse their trust, but then he does something selfless and they realize he's really a good guy. This movie has been made over and over again. In this case it features the very unlikeable Eugenio Derbez who hasn't been funny since last decade. But it has Salma Hayek as the sister so I had to give it at least three stars for that. I'm a little disappointed in Salma. She doesn't need to do cheap movies like this.
Gotta say, most Mexican comedy leaves me completely cold. Cultural thing, I guess; just seems so infantile. But I've been a major Derbez fan for over 20 years, since the days when I used to stay up to watch Al derecho y al Derbez on UNI. And he doesn't disappoint here, either. Latin Lover has his acid commentary on American culture, his trademark self-mocking (nobody can ring in a totally committed performance of an essentially reprehensible character like Eugenio, and make you love him in spite of yourself), and his wild, eccentric sense of humour. He's the Monty Python of Mexico, and that's a very good thing. Latin Lover is basically a Mexican movie made (mostly) in English. They even film "American" scenes in Mexican locations, which is awesome! How many times do we see Hollywood movies trying to pass off American or Canadian settings as other countries? Eugenio strikes again. That said, people who aren't familiar with Mexican comedic conventions will find some things "hokey". (I assure you the comedy of your nation is just as hokey, you've just been trained to accept it.) Those same people will probably also fail to note how groundbreaking Derbez is, with his adult-pitched gags, his razor-sharp irony, and his calm, cerebral delivery. People should have to watch 30 hours of non-Derbez Mexican comedy before they're allowed to have an opinion of Eugenio Derbez. He's a great comic by any standard; compared to typical Mexican fare he's a freakin' genius. Anyway, see the movie. It's fluff. It's meant to be fluff. It's talented, entertaining fluff. Have fun. Don't take it so seriously. You'll have fun. Oh, and to the woman who rated it low because "so much of the movie is in Spanish and I don't speak Spanish"...The Spanish bits are subtitled. All of them. In English. So that's my advice: accept another culture's comedic conventions; relish Eugenio Derbez' respect for his audience and fellow performers; and, uh... learn to read. And you'll like this movie.
'HOW TO BE A LATIN LOVER': Four Stars (Out of Five)A comedy about a veteran gold-digger who's dumped by his 80-year-old wife, after 25-years of pampered marriage, and then must learn to survive on his own for the first time. The film was directed by actor turned first time director Ken Marino, and it was scripted by Chris Spain and Jon Zack. The movie stars Eugenio Derbez, Raphael Alejandro, Salma Hayek, Rob Lowe, Kristen Bell, Raquel Welch, Rob Riggle, Rob Huebel, Rob Corddry, Renee Taylor and Michael Cera. It's received mostly negative reviews from critics, but it was a surprise big hit at the Box Office (thanks largely to Hispanic moviegoers). I found it to be pretty funny actually.Maximo (Derbez) decided at a very young age that he wanted to marry rich, and never have to work. So he married a wealthy woman (Taylor) more than twice his age, and spent the majority of his life pampered and spoiled. Then one day, when his wife is 80, she cheats on him with a younger car salesman (Cera), and kicks him out of the house. Maximo must then learn to survive on his own, for the fist time in his life, and he turns to his sister (Hayek), and her son (Alejandro), for help. At the same time he targets another older rich woman (Welch), to try and seduce. I honestly was not expecting to find this movie very humorous, or amusing much at all, but it's actually pretty funny. The premise is definitely a little disturbing to me though. Just the idea of making a whole movie about this disgusting self absorbed male gold digger does not sound appealing to me at all. That's why I actually put off seeing it for several months, but It's pretty funny honestly. It's not touching, like it sometimes wants to be, but it is clever and witty. Thanks in large part to the awesome actors. Everyone is perfectly cast, and hilarious in it. I'd definitely recommend seeing it, if you want a few good laughs.
This is really funny comedy. I nearly ignored it due to low rating, however I am pleased, I have not. I would recommend to watch it. The movie made me lough out loud, some scenes were really funny. Casting is also pretty good, as for grown ups and very young actors too. The story is predictable, yet interesting.
