It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional

Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.

Mark David Chapman had very little self worth or reason to live in his mind. After traveling the world and ending up in a paradise (Hawaii), he experiences joy only in small rushes, and can only remark on a short period of meaningful moments in his life, when he helped Vietnamese children. Now he's grabbing at old obsessions, becoming Holden Caulfield, out to kill the most famous "phony" that he knows because his existence has to change drastically in some way. As for the film, I feel it succeeds in what it tries to do, make you feel anxious, awkward, lonely and somewhat sick to the stomach as Chapman certainly was. I feel it's helpful to relive sad stories once in a while and to grieve for your own losses in those moments of reflection. That's how I felt when I watched this and I ended up revisiting Lennon's great solo work, tearing up and telling myself, his peaceful, loving messages must live on some way in my life.

Chapter 27 (2007) Runtime: 82 minutes Genre: Crime, dramaNo surprise that every John Lennon fan knows about Mark David Chapman. I'll come straight to the point, the movie was bleak, tedious and most of all highly predictable. The element of surprise was equal to nothing, the direction was weak and imprecise plot was very blunt and prolonged for no reason whatsoever. Chapter 27 would have made a hauntingly bereaving impact if it was a 20 to 30 minutes short movie.Director's exertion from start till end was to show the other side of the image, the happenings of Mark David Chapman but the back story was missing (probably not that important) but we needed to see why Mark David Chapman did what he did?Acting was good Jared Leto did a fine job playing Chapman apart from the fact that he had to put on extra 80 pounds to play the main character and for that, hats off to Mr. Leto for his ambitious and audacious effort put altogether though at some points I lost my focus and concentration because simply put Leto was too good to play the role but the movie was immensely hollow. The pace of the movie did not match the brilliance of Leto's talent as they were both moving in different parallel at a bad time."Overall a weak movie that had all the capabilities to become one of the finest.""A well placed 6/10"

Many viewers seem to want to blame the director of this film for shooting John Lennon all over again, or emphasize that former sigh-guy Leto put on 80 pounds to inhabit the slovenly, corpulent body of Mark David Chapman and to no avail Those of us who lived through the Beatles, who admired them, were horrified by what seemed to be an inexplicable killing--and wanted explanations, as we want to understand the killing of a beloved celebrity or a president. As depicted in this film, the twisted psyche of this killer is not revealed--as as Friday says in Dragnet, we just get the facts, which are vivid enough to give us some idea of the weird hallucinations that went on in the mind of a killer obsessed with one of the most influential men on the planet. Since you know how this story is bound to end, you only might want to watch it if you want to see an acting tour-de-force or get some notion of what kind of sickness infested the man who called himself Holden. This film is not a cheerer-upper, and doesn't offer the usual voyeuristic excitements, but it seems sincere and well-assembled and Leto deserves credit for not wanting always to be The Dreamboat Guy.

J.D. Salinger's novel "Catcher in the Rye" was written by a sick and bitter mind with sympathy for the devil- so too was this film. I felt like the makers were expressing sympathy for Lennon's killer (who SHOULD remain nameless)so much so that they granted the killer's wish- his dream has come true with this abomination- a whole movie about him! Happy, Leto? It also makes me wonder a little about Jared Leto & Lindsay Lohan, considering the recent turns their career's have taken lately. This film is as exploitive as a film can be, and I feel the same as I did when I finished Catcher in the Rye all those years ago- I want my 84 minutes back, and now I have a third reason to detest J.D. Salinger!(FYI, I actually am not a huge Beatles fan, but I hate murder.)
