Fanciful, disturbing, and wildly original, it announces the arrival of a fresh, bold voice in American cinema.

I won't bother recounting the story background, I just want to vent about the many things I thought were unforgivably stupid:1. The book of Hebrews is in the New Testament, morons.2. Don't write your script about a deep subterranean ancient site and then shoot it on a set that looks like a generic basement boiler room/custodian's office.3. The team is supposedly a mercenary unit, but lots of dialog as the movie grinds along makes it sound like they are on active duty with the government. Note that I don't even have to get into a critique of their skill or behavior to find a fatal flaw. 4. Would an ancient religious order dedicated to preserving the entrapment of an ancient evil have so many members who look like generic modern-day clerics? Wouldn't something with monastic robes and ancient holy weapons have been more fun? Why do half of them look like scientists and half like Father Central Casting? Are they here to fight the evil or study it? The movie can't make up its mind and probably doesn't know.5. Cuba Gooding's flashback is supposedly critical to his character, but it rehashes the same footage endlessly, only revealing about 2 seconds of new info each time. When the "big reveal" comes it's nothing that earth-shaking, and feels empty because of a total lack of context or consequences, other than "he once did something he's ashamed of," but doled out like it's going to be as vital as the Zapruder film or something.6. Why don't all the bad guys leave while the mercs are stumbling around getting killed?7. How many nephilim are there in this particular location? The script sets it up as one, then says "we" and "they" an awful lot. And not in a context where it makes sense that all nephilim around the world are being discussed.8. What is the threat? Seduction by evil? Madness? Are the sores and the black gook just a symptom or a part of the corruption process? Once again, the script doesn't know or care. One minute the gook burns like acid, the next it makes you into a demon foot-soldier.A horror/action/suspense film that plays in the unfilled areas of the theological map can be awesome. The first Prophecy film is a sterling example. But you have to do your homework. Know something about both orthodox religion and its heretical offshoots before you start playing with alternative histories and theologies. The random, bland, conspiracy pap spouted by this script is indefensible. "It's all a game! They're playing us for fools! They're just playing both sides against the middle! Everything you believe is a lie!" Yawn.

You know how some folks tell you a thing is really bad and you go see for yourself, not expecting much, and you're pleasantly surprised that it's actually good. Well that's what all the bad reviews of this flick did for me.I thot I would check it out for Cuba Gooding whose career has always been a bit erratic, and much to my pleasure I saw a well made creepy thriller/horror. I feel sorry for all the actors who really do good work in this film and who may not get credit for it on account of the less than stellar reviews. Gooding, Perlman, Winstone, and the others all do as good as they've done in other, more highly praised, work. It's a low budget film, most of the story is interiors, small rooms and corridors, but what creepy scary rooms they are. At any moment something may jump out at you. Its flaws are the ending is a little metaphysical - I'd prefer more explosives and bullets and less words, and what is almost a law of nature for these sort of flicks - the dumb people who wander off alone down a dark hall, but where would horror/thriller/mystery flicks be without them. Anyway, I hope you give this film a chance. You just might enjoy it.

An elite military is hired to rescue an important scientist by the name of Wesley Cardell (Ron Perlman) from a top secret Middle Eastern archaeological site. Captain Mack (Oscar-Winner:Cuba Gooding Jr.) and his team (Taryn Manning, Zack Ward, Frankie G, Jason London, Brandon Fobbs and Stephanie Jacobsen) along with an CIA agent named Elissa Cardell (Valerie Cruz) are descending deep below civilization. Which Elissa is hoping to rescue her father Wesley. Soon enough, the team faces unspeakable evil. Which evil spirits focus on their fears and the team starts having hallucinations. While Mack has flashbacks of his former best friend Blakely (Ray Winstone) and the ancient evil is trying to kill them, one at a time.Directed by Jason Connery (51, Pandemic) made an enjoyable, trashy, cheesy and in this very made "B" movie. Which the director is the son of a very big film star, which is Oscar-Winner:Sean Connery. The premise of the feature isn't very original, since the picture will certainly reminds you of "John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness" and "Event Horizon". The movie has an surprisingly good cast including Henry Rollins and Bill Moseley in a memorable bit part as a possessed scientist.DVD has an good anamorphic Widescreen (1.85:1) transfer and an fine Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. The DVD has an fairly enjoyable commentary track by the director and actor:Gooding Jr., an behind the scenes featurette, alternate scenes and outtakes. "The Devil's Tomb" is best enjoyed, if you don't take this movie seriously. The movie is fun, if you watch it with an open mind. Perphas the feature could have been more convincing, if the picture had an bigger budget or an better script. Anyway, "The Devil's Tomb" is "B" movie trash all the way. (*** ½/*****).
