Hyena Road
Three different men, three different worlds, three different wars – all stand at the intersection of modern warfare – a murky world of fluid morality where all is not as it seems. A unique and dramatic look at the Canadian Army in Afghanistan.

Great Film overall
Am i the only one who thinks........Average?
Very interesting film. Was caught on the premise when seeing the trailer but unsure as to what the outcome would be for the showing. As it turns out, it was a very good film.
It’s sentimental, ridiculously long and only occasionally funny
Well done. Even the violent, bloody parts were brief, just to give a sense of the war. "Fighting many wars" was mentioned by the characters, and the movie depicted that. Bringing in Alexander the Great was interesting for perspective. Yes, Kandahar is a very old city. The depiction of the camp, the special effects, depictions of cities and villages very realistic.
This is an outstanding war film. As others have commented, it examines the Afghanistan conflict in a particularly Canadian way --- which means that each character has a distinct point of view and a unique place in the world. The film makes clear not only that each understands his/her situation differently, but also that each viewpoint merits the full weight of our attention and consideration. Both the nobility of sacrifice and the utter senselessness of war are captured. There have been many well-made recent films about our current conflict with the Islamic world. This is certainly one of the best of them.
Am trying to figure out how "1000 true stories" became "Hyena Road"? Can somebody tell me the connection between the two please? Maybe there is some obscure book of this title out there some where that may not even be a war book . Paul Gross would probably be the best person to answer this question as he is listed as screen writer. But seriously I would welcome any discussion as above. The movie was very good as very few Canadian movies about the war have been produced. It is noted that most of the actors were Canadians and parts of the movie filmed in Manitoba on a military base. The rest was filmed in Jordan. Paul Gross sure had his hands full as he starred, produced and wrote the screenplay.
I figured going into the movie, once I saw that it was a Canadian flick, that the typical cynical movie expectation would be the outcome. I figured I would end up turning it off once I saw the typical low budget, bad acting, political correctness that seems to be Canadian cinema. NOT A CHANCE! This movie was fantastic! The actors did a terrific job. The whole Hyena Road deal was a little thin but it made it up in other areas like the complexities of middle eastern culture, history and honour. It showed the Canadian forces as true professionals that they are. The narrators voice seemed a bit out of place but most of the information provided gave perspective and background and the narrations were infrequent. Afghanistan is certainly not a place for the faint of heart and this movie showed why. This showed as a big budget movie. I have already recommended this movie to several colleagues and friends.WELL DONE Mr. Gross!
