This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
When the crew of an American tugboat boards an abandoned Russian research vessel, the alien life form aboard regards them as a virus which must be destroyed. This movie tries way too hard to be Aliens meets Terminator especially since producer Gale Ann Hurd produced the first 3 Terminator Movies and Aliens but the film just fails and you know that your movie sucks when Donald Sutherland is bored as hell his performance was a let down although i will give them a credit the cgi was OK but the actual effects they created were pretty good and Jamie Lee Curtis wasn't that bad but with a story like this and a cast of this length you would except the movie would be awesome but nope not a chance. I give it a 5.5 out of 10 still pretty bad except some things in it.
"Virus", brings to the screen the story of a crew whose ship is badly damaged when struck by a typhoon in the Pacific, as it stumbles across a seemingly abandoned Russian ship. Things get a bit more complicated when they are introduced to the ship's new occupants... Jamie Lee Curtis, Donald Sutherland, William Baldwin, and the rest of the cast carry out their performances very well. The plot is full of holes. Once the computer comes on, the first thing it does is sink the American ship, which means it is still stranded in the ocean. It has apparently read all the Russian computers, and does not realize that if it keeps sinking ships, they will just sink it. Also the Russian navy would send a destroyer to sink it if they lost contact and found Americans on it. The director apparently forgot he was on a ship, and it builds a machine for itself as big as a room, but manages to move through the doorway and gangways of a ship without leaving a clue. Once the Americans turn back on the power., all the little robots that it built out of parts of Computers and ship come to life, and start building more of the little monsters. Yet two of the Americans, watch this to find the robots antics funny rather then completely strange. They are attacked by half man, half machine robots, who have the worst aim possible. In corridors and rooms it fires off magazine after magazine of machine gun fire, and hits nothing. The dialogue is mostly very good with tension build up and intense lines. Action scenes however, loaded with special effects and saturated with a coarse taste of humour, subtracts from the atmosphere and status of the film considerably. Towards the end, the plot becomes untenable as it twists and turns into the more and more ridiculous. The Story line I found was ultimately very weak and character development practically non-existent. I felt technically the film was well made and transitions sound, but the directing was a bit of a let down.Overall rating: 6 out of 10.
As a typhoon approaches the South Pacific, some mysterious outer space force attacks a Russian "missile and satellite tracking" ship. Nearby, a small America tugboat barely weathers the storm. Led by steadfast navigator Jamie Lee Curtis (as Kelly "Kit" Foster) and handsome engineer William Baldwin (as Steve Baker), the crew barely makes it into the eye of the storm. Hoping to make repairs, they instead encounter and board the Russian ship, which is seemingly deserted. The huge vessel has 42 labs and is valuable as a salvage ship. If no Russian personnel survive, those returning the ship will be paid millions of dollars. After losing his tugboat's cargo, heavily-accented Captain Donald Sutherland (as Robert Everton) wants to collect the cash. Naturally, he hopes to find no survivors. This puts him at odds with attractive scientist Joanna Pacula (as Nadia Vinogradova)...Special effects wizard John Bruno directs this Dark Horse comic book adaptation. Not surprisingly, "Virus" is a special effects movie. It starts off with an attack and storm. The subsequent, short characterization period really doesn't endear us to the cast, who seem very stereotypical. We should have a much stronger time getting to know the characters. That we may not want to know them is another problem. Also, there is also no real suspense as things immediately get rough for the crew; consequently, there is little time to dread the villainous presence or care what it kills. An ambiguous ending jolt seems to be setting up a possible sequel, but we were probably better off letting this "Virus" run its course.***** Virus (1/15/99) John Bruno ~ Jamie Lee Curtis, William Baldwin, Donald Sutherland, Joanna Pacula
I'll give it 10 stars, because I don't think it deserves the current (very low) rating. It's rated 4.6/10 currently. I would've given in 5 or 6 stars. It's not an 'excellent' movie, I admit. But it's watchable and it's far from 'complete crap'. The premise is intriguing, but, sadly, the execution ruined it for me. The script was also not very good. Surprisingly enough, even the acting was mediocre -- they have top-rate actors playing leads, but the scrip and direction is so bad, that even these great actors couldn't save the movie. It's an O.K. film, but nothing spectacular. There's very little suspense and the alien robots are a bit lame (that cringeworthy main frame voice... oh, the horror!).They could've found a much better use for the captain, but as soon as the fun begins (he volunteers to be turned into one of 'them'), the good guys blow him away within the very first minute! What the...? I did like the fact that the movie wasn't cheesy -- there weren't any wacky romantic scenes and the clichés were kept to a minimum. The explosions were also quite good, and I liked the look of the deserted ship -- quite atmospheric.Like I said, it's not a masterpiece, but I've seen much worse.
