Waste of time
One of my all time favorites.
Good movie but grossly overrated
In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
The premise of Isabella catching her cheating husband and running off to San Francisco to find herself is a good one. Which is why the development of the story and the ending defeats the purpose of the entire movie. Clearly it's not just the cheating that's the issue; Isabella's husband is also controlling and doesn't let her be seen or acknowledged for her talents. She hides away in the kitchen while he takes all the credit for her work. Naturally a man like this will not tolerate a "woman on top" for very long. So why on earth can't this movie do what it set out to do and have Isabella go out into the world and discover who is is without her husband, become successful, and meet someone more worthy of her who embraces her as the "woman on top"? No. Instead it becomes some kind of bizarre love story with the cheating, controlling guy involving a sea godess. Mmkay. Honestly, it's sad Isabella finally broke free of her husband only to be paralysed and not be able to do anything or live her life without him. It's basically a story of a sad, pathetic, self-victimising, weak, codependent woman who can't live without a lousy man because he's good in the sack. Just, absolutely ridiculous. This movie goes against everything it set out to do and just sends a really bad message to women. 1/10.
In Brazil, Isabella (Penélope Cruz) suffered from motion sickness all her life. The sea goddess Yemanja compensated her with a passion for cooking. She falls for Toninho Oliveira and they get married. She dutifully worked in his restaurant despite the many admirers trying to lure her away. She finds staying in control by being on top would keep the motion sickness away. She catches Toninho with another woman and run off to San Francisco. She stays with her friend Monica Jones (Harold Perrineau) and TV producer Cliff Lloyd (Mark Feuerstein) falls head over heels for her. Her cooking literally knocks him off his feet. Her cooking show starts taking off and then Toninho shows up.Cruz is incredibly lovely. She is luminescent. Neither guy measures up. Toninho is a womanizing Latino stereotype. Feuerstein is not a good leading man. Cliff has a bit of weasel and he's not worthy of her. The ending is horrible. Cruz simply glows and her character deserves better.
Machismo. It's that thing that means a man is always King of the castle, even if he has no castle. In this land, here Brazil, Isabella (Penelope Cruz) was the man. She had to be in control, and her husband Toninho (Murilo Benicio) suffered the laughs of their friends and acquaintances. He could stand no more, had an affair, and she left.A move to San Francisco, a little witchcraft, and success appears as she forgets Tohinho completely. Oh, and there is Monica (Harold Perrineau), a real blast!Director Fina Torres gives us a funny and romantic film with great Latin music in the background.
I think you have to understand myth's and ideas in other parts of the world to be able to understand the movie. Personally, I loved it. It gives you that trip to Brazil without leaving your house. The music was great, the story was a bit cheesy but refreshing. Open your eyes to other cultures. Allow yourself to enjoy the simple things such as cooking. I think it was sensual, funny and refreshing.I think Penelope Cruz did a great job. Having seen most of her movies, I can say that her best movies are the ones that are not overly popular. Woman on top gives women the opportunity to be successful and show men that we can do it.
