Thanks for the memories!
Plenty to Like, Plenty to Dislike
It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional
The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.
So, I usually read a few reviews before writing my own, that way I make sure my review is completely biased! Actually I just don't know what to say usually but that's OK ;-PSo, I was saying, this is a nice comedy, not a laugh out loud one. I really enjoy watching it just as a movie, and that's how it should be appreciated. There were actually a few laughs now and then, but most of the movie is just smiles. It's just watching likable character having a good time. I'm halfway through and there's nothing really dramatic. The nice points: - Very likable characters. It's enjoyable to watch their development. - Milla Jonovich's character: really likable, and a bit unique. I picked this movie because I was curious about her and I got quite surprised. - Gives you some kind of warm feeling watching it.Other points: - It's funny in a way, but it's not really about funny jokes. Like I said, expect smiles more than laughs. - It's not overly dramatic, and a bit slow pace. - Overall, yeah I'd recommend it... OK keep in mind I watch movies while surfing the web though, (hum, like right now ;-P). Hey, but I still enjoy it. Cheers.
This film is about a talented ventriloquist and his loser life. He finds solace in his dummy and a girl of his dreams."Dummy" is interestingly fun and dark at the same time. Adrien Brody is great as a socially inept individual, he portrays timidness so well. Milla Jovovich plays an emotionally unstable rocker, and she also shines. The dysfunctional family interaction is eye catching. I feel so sorry for Illeana Douglas' character as she sacrificed her dreams to please others. Somehow, these wildly different individuals' interactions form a journey of self fulfillment and happiness.I find "Dummy" an intelligent and multi-layered comedy, I think it deserves a wider audience.
It's a pity that Brody's award winning acting in "The Pianist" overshadowed what I think was the best performance of his career so far, as the romantically clueless and vocationally strange Steven in "Dummy". The film is just as captivating as "The Pianist", but in totally different ways. Brody completely inhabits of the body, mind, and soul of Steven -- and his dummy -- surrounded by an amazing cast that seems tailor made for each part. The film also includes some of the most subtle and hilarious comedic situations ever. (If you enjoy Wes Anderson or Coen Brothers style humor, then this will be a treat). Brody's Steven is sweet, disturbing, funny, shy and sometimes brave with amazing skill and believability. You feel yourself rooting for him despite all odds. He's a lovable loser that you want to win the girl at last, and I promise he'll be your favorite ventriloquist by the end of the film. If you have an appetite for a unique, well-made movie to restore your faith in movies (and actors) rent "Dummy" tonight.
This movie is terrific. It's very funny and very powerful. Everything that happens is a necessary plot point to tell the story. Nothing is extraneous. Each character is uniquely entertaining and real, they each remind us of someone we know. We root for Stephen, we dislike Heidi, and we can't help but love Fanny. The characters are developed wonderfully. The performances are all terrific. I've never seen any of Adrien Brody's work before, but if it's all as great as this then he's destined for super stardom. Illeana Douglas is hilarious and perfect as usual. I was most blown away by Milla Jovovich. She's amazingly fun to watch on screen and her New Jersey accent is dead-on. Great dialog and flawless directing. Simply put it's a wonderful film with a unique theme, which is unique in itself.
