Very very predictable, including the post credit scene !!!
Good story, Not enough for a whole film
Great movie. Not sure what people expected but I found it highly entertaining.
All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
-Violet had awkward stilted delivery, felt like somebody more experienced/better trained should have had the role, and yes I understand the character was written to sound whimsical what im saying is she sounds like her actor is trying for whimsical but instead conveys awkwardness -production quality was weak. -shitty soft focus was a stylistic choice but it just came across as an ameteur ass film school student gimick/crutch. -first 30 minutes of the movie felt completely disjointed and directionless with vague characterization. -you can tell whoever shot this must have really had a thing quirky witty college movies, but their execution falls flat on its face -the writing takes weird turns into unconvincing plot devices and half baked conflict. -when the movie tried to be funny it sucked the air out of the room. -the plot didn't so much as build as lazily string itself along without any real momentum or energy. -the movie tried to be quirky and smart but it was just directionless, awkward, and film school pretentious.
Of course in Germany they changed the title into "Algebra in Love". Which kind of is something that is in the movie too, but of course the original title is way better. Although I guess it might be confusing for some who don't have a clue what they are watching too. It just states what situation the women in the movie are. But in a different way than some would imagine.Gerwig is great in her offbeat role, but the support cast is helping too. It's a tough theme and script to pull off (as can be seen in some commentaries here on IMDb too), but while it won't reach everyone, I think it will reach enough people who will like/love it.
Violet (Greta Gerwig) is a beautiful co-ed at a Seven Oaks College, which was, until rather recently, an all male school. In Violet's mind, and in those of her two protegees, Rose (Megalyn Echikumwoke) and Heather (Carrie MacLemore), the men on campus need to improve their hygiene and enlighten their minds. Oddly, this campus has Roman frats, instead of Greek, huh. Also, these damsels scope out freshmen ladies to take under their wings. On the first day of a new year, the trio spy Lily (Analeigh Tipton), a beautiful gal who, they think, looks a bit lost. As it turns out, Lily is a sophomore transferring from another school, but Violet persuades Lil to become their roommate. The new student is very glad to do so, for a glitch messed up her dorm arrangements anyway. But, Violet is surprised to find that Lily has a mind of her own, one that doesn't always jive with Violet's agenda. Also, Lily states that she is friends with a male upperclassmen, Xavier, but assures the girls that its not a romance. Violet herself has a "blue--eyed" dance partner whom she secretly loves. But, sometimes there is no time for amour, as the girls run a volunteer suicide prevention clinic, offering free donuts and tap dance therapy. One day, a man named Jim arrives at the clinic and the girls give him the sweet treat and pleas to tell them what's wrong. But, wait! Its not Jim that has issues, its a girl in his dorm called Priss, whose boyfriend dumped her. Letting Jim keep the donut, the gals rush off to the residents hall and extend their friendship and advice to Priss. She makes a nice recovery, even to the point of gazing at Violet's beau. Uh oh! Also crossing paths with these beautiful ladies is detested male co-ed, who runs the campus newspaper, and a young male named Charlie (Adam Brody) who comes off as a generous rich kid with a lucrative job. With males and females in such intimate contact, romance is bound to ensue. But, as Violet states, becoming a doctor, lawyer, or teacher is admirable yet does not compare to starting a dance craze for all eternity, like the Charleston. Will our Damsels really suffer some distress? Yes, indeed! This delightful, quirky film is the newest offering from an all-too-rare writer/director, Whit Stilman. If you were lucky enough to see Metropolitan, The Last Days of Disco or Barcelona, please make time for this one, too. Like the others, it is very dialogue driven and the lines come in rapid fire so one must pay attention to appreciate the very fine script. Also, most of the actors Stilman uses are attractive unknowns and this one follows suit. Even so, the cast is a marvel. Also, the college setting, photography, and, most importantly, the grand costumes are big assets, too. As stated, Stilman's direction is swift and furious, dazzling the viewer immensely. In summation, Damsels is the caviar of film-making in a mostly beer-and-pretzels industry. Don't miss Damsels if you truly love film!
OK... This is a terrible movie. Please don't lose your time, seriously. Is stupid, very bad acting, and honestly, makes you angry. But,if you want to give a chance any way, do this: watch the first fifteen minutes, if you think is a stupidity, drop it. I saw this film due to the fact that critical reviews were mostly positive, and I saw the trailer and it looked good. I watched it all the way through, although at about the 15 minute mark, I came close to turning it... I wish I had. It gets worse and worse, and has no point at all. Sorry if I made any mistake, but I'm not English speaking. I did this because i'm trying to save you from a fiasco. I hope you miss only fifteen minutes top with this garbage.
