Good story, Not enough for a whole film
After playing with our expectations, this turns out to be a very different sort of film.
An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
This movie just goes to prove that even if you have a fantastic and talented cast you still may only come out with a mediocre product. I did say product as this feels as though the director Barry Battles was aiming to create a cult film. When will they learn, cult films aren't created... they are born...It's this feeling that Battles was trying so hard to create something visually stunning, fashionable, and iconic that deprives the film of atmosphere and emotion. The story that Battles and his writing partner, Griffin Hood, come up with is a classic damsel in distress, with a few action-packed twists. The three outlaw brothers, Brick, McQueen, and Lincoln Oodie (portrayed brilliantly by Clayne Crawford, Travis Fimmell, and Daniel Cudmore respectively) are just on the wrong side of the law. However, their felonious escapades usually end up helping to deminish the criminal element in town so Sheriff Millard (played stoically by Andre Braugher), turns a blind eye... it also helps that they sometimes work for him. Then one day they meet Celeste (Eva Longoria) who hires them to go and get her son Rob away from Carlos (Billy Bob Thornton), who is holding him captive.Unbeknown to them, Carlos is a major drug dealer, so when they rescue Rob from him they are instantly on his hit list. Carlos proceeds to send out gang after gang of murderous cutthroats to kill the brothers and bring the boy back to him. With a cast this good and a story so strong this should have been a magnificently enjoyable action-packed romp. However, it falls flat and I can only believe it's down to the direction of Battles as well as his desire to create something different. As I stated previously, all this leaves the film lacking ambiance and leaves it wanting. The cast and the story do carry the film and keep it from falling too far into banality. If it's bad outside or your off work ill then this is a decent way to waste a few minutes of your time.
It's Deja Vu All Over Again as Today these DTV Trash Movies are just Like the Fodder for Drive-Ins and Grindhouses of a Bygone Era. A Mainstream Movie (pick a Tarantino) has Success and then Roger Corman and His Ilk would Rush Off and in a Day or Two would Send Off Send Ups and Make a Quick Buck.Welcome to the new Millennium. So here We have a Repeat of the Aforementioned Formula. These Opportunist are Riffing Tarantino who has made a Career of Riffing. This is a Not Bad Piece of Work with Southern White Trash as the Anti-Heroes, with a Black Southern Corrupt Cop so No Rants of Reverse-Racism can be Taken Seriously.Of Course, Nothing in this B-Movie is to be Taken Seriously. It is All Played for Laughs and Thrills. Whether You Find it Funny or Thrilling will Absolutely Depend on Your Tendencies, Taste (or lack there of), and Tolerance for Low-Brow, Sophomoric Movies that are In Your Face and Love Every Minute of it.This is an Above Average DTV that Delivers Enough of its Intent and while Not Great Filmmaking or Writing is Entertaining and its Offensiveness is Well Handled and Even Charming at Times. Definitely Worth a Watch for Fans of Exploitation Cinema, Low-Budget Rip-Offs, Filthy Characters (with hearts of gold) that Revel in and are Proud to be Called "The Great Unwashed".
Why You Might Like It: The one thing that I thought stood out in this movie was some surprising directing/cinematography/technical work. The story is actually solid and the acting is serviceable, which makes the movie fairly entertaining. It was surprisingly a fun watch, which might be the result of low expectations and maybe even a decent product. Why You Might Not Like It: Don't expect big roles for Thornton or Longoria, as their screen time is limited. The acting is just okay and at times not great. The movie does have some flaws, is unrealistic, and fairly predictable if those are deal breakers for you.Acting/Casting: 6* Directing/Cinematography/Technical: 6*Plot/Characters: 6* Entertainment Value: 6* Total - 6+6+6+6 = 24/4 = 6.0* - Worth a watch
Hey what a great film, this definitely had undertones of Tarantino, in fact if I never knew any better I would have said this was one of his films. The three main characters were well portrayed, if a little OTT ! Eva Longoria is always easy on the eye, its just a pity we never got to see MORE of her if you know what I mean! Storyline whilst quite simple and basic was OK, there were certainly plenty of plot holes and the story was weak in places, but at the end of the day this was just a schlockfest of violence and one liners. Billy Bob Thornton, whilst getting top billing played quite a minor role which could have been developed more thoroughly and comedically. Although I have never heard of any of the main 3 actors, I am sure they must have had prior quality roles. There was a bit of schmaltz in this movie with the invalid boy ( well played by Thomas Brodie Sangster of Game of Thrones fame, giving a performance akin to Daniel day Lewis in My Left Foot) receiving some gush from the brothers. Anyway, a movie well worth watching, not an Oscar nomination, but still a good yarn and a laugh...
