Memorable, crazy movie
A Masterpiece!
This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
This story takes place during the oppressive reign of the Manchus of the Qing Dynasty, who overtake various settlements and terrorize and torture the citizens. A young ethics student named San Te (Chia-Hui Liu) suffers personal losses and eventually makes his way to the legendary Shaolin Temple, where it is said that the resident monks train their order in the art of kung fu. More than anything, San Te wants training, and the monks are willing to let him try, although they normally shunned outsiders. Their prerogative was not to get involved in "worldly affairs".San Te actually starts at the top, so you can't accuse him of not being ambitious. He enters each chamber in the temple and learns a different skill, impressing the higher-ups with his incredible tenacity. It is San Tes' rigorous training that forms the balance of this martial arts classic, considered by buffs to be one of THE definitive kung fu films. HIs trials and tribulations allow for some pretty funny, broad comedy at times, but you do marvel at his determination to succeed.Choreographed and directed by Chia-Liang Liu, this features fight scenes so intense that they keep you watching, and scarcely let you take a breath. There is some graphic violence, but not enough of it to truly put off more squeamish viewers. Excellent production values allow for a lot of potent atmosphere and flavour, and the music by Yung-Yu Chen is suitably rousing. The camera work and widescreen photography are first rate. What is appreciated is that San Te does not master kung fu in a relatively brief amount of time. He actually spends years at the temple and his training is a constant work in progress. Chia-Hui Liu delivers a performance of wonderful earnestness and intensity, and it's very easy to root for him all the way.Lieh Lo, John Cheung, and Wilson Tong are very effective loathsome bad guys, and the engaging Yue Wong is quite appealing in the small, fairly comic role of "Miller Six", whose father died before he could give his son a name.Being a relative newcomer to this genre, I was told that this grand epic would be a good place to start, and it's a sentiment that I'll repeat here.Eight out of 10.
If you are a true fan of martial arts movies who is into movies like Enter of dragon, fist of fury, drunken master, fearless and many more this is the one movie you must have on your shelf. Action packed, funny at moment, with a positive plot that will get your cheering for the under dog. A movie you can watch again and again. Great fight scenes, and teaching techniques that will blow your mind, brilliant characters.I love the Shaw brothers and I love this movie! One of the best classic martial arts movies. I recommend every kung fu movie lover watches this it will blow them away. overall ill have to give it a 9 out of 10 perfecto film
So far the only Chinese themed martial art movies I have seen before this film is Crouching tiger hidden dragon, hero, enter the dragon and fist of fury. before my favourite movie out of those was enter the dragon but after seeing this in which I watched online a couple of days ago. I got to say I thing 26th chamber has won my favour over Enter the dragon. why because the story is far better and more emotional to the point your respect and care grows for the main character. the fight scenes are iconic and classic. the opening in my opinion really got me into the mood especially the opening theme which created goose bumps on the back of my neck. Sadly most of the people who know movies like crouching tiger or enter the dragon have not hear of the 36th chamber of shaolin making it an unknown classic, this movie needs to be more well known.
The 36th Chamber or Shaolin is the way martial arts movies are meant to be made.No cheap hang wires stunt doubles or computer generation effect, just pure skill in a classic old school Kung Fu film. Chia Hui Liu is phenomenal as both an actor and kung fu expert. The moves and tasks he performs in the film are all just examples of pure skill in martial arts. 36th Chamber of Shaolin is both a great story and a perfect example of a Kung Fu movie. not to forget this movie was released in the 70s a perfect time for the Hong Kong Kung Fu film industry which produced many classic films along the way and one thing for sure this movie has to be one of them. The sound, quality and audio is perfect, the script is well written for a kung Fu movie and the acting is also perfect.
