Must See Movie...
Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.
There are moments in this movie where the great movie it could've been peek out... They're fleeting, here, but they're worth savoring, and they happen often enough to make it worth your while.
Very good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.
Jack Deth is a cop in 2247, disposing of the disciples of Martin Whistler, who uses his psychic power to 'trance' those with weak minds and force them to obey his every desire. Whistler had been thought to be dead, but he's alive in the year 1985. Whistler's plan is to hunt down the ancestors of the City Council, and then nothing can stop Whistler from controlling the city. That's where Deth comes into the equation, and is sent back by inhabiting the body of his ancestor. The only problem is that Whistler's ancestor is a police detective, and he's trancing people back in 1985. With the help of Lena, he must find and protect Hap Ashby, a former baseball pitcher now living on Skid Row, and face Whistler.........If Trancers didn't have such a short running time, one fears it would probably outstay its welcome. It's a cult movie because it's just absolutely bonkers, and Thomerson, thanks to some bizarre role choices, is one walking, talking cult. And this is where it all began. It's spawned so many imitations, someone being sent back, or forward in time to prevent something, or make something happen, and with BTTF being released only a few months before, it's seems that 1985 set the template for time travel adventure.Almost very high concept science fiction action movie released since, has some sort of reference to Trancers. The Matrix Time cop Hidden Even X-Men: DOFP have some sort of connection to this movie, but why does such a low budget, B-Grade movie have such a legacy?Again, it's just unbelievable, and straight to the point. There's no rationale to the film, the narrative doesn't even try to explain the concept of being Tranced, you just get Tranced, and the film just concentrates on Deth, and his wonderful could care less attitude. It's fun, silly, and spawned so many sequels.A tent pole of eighties cool.
Aside from its awesomely-named main character, Jack Deth (played by Tim Thomerson ... equally badass), "Trancers" is one of those VHS time-killers you found at the video store way back when. Thing's only 77 minutes, but it moves like molasses. That said, it's a movie that proudly wears its B-movie aesthetics on its sleeve, staged in both the nondescript L.A. and a future lit by "Blade Runner" neon. It's the kind of pulp sci-fi romp that was right at home in the '80s, and some of the ideas showcased here are pretty nifty (bullet-time, anyone?). It's not great, but the movie does come with its own charm, and there are far worse ways to kill some time on a Saturday. 6/10
Trancers was a pretty decent go around for Charles Band, the director of the film. It has action, chemistry between the leads and a decent enough sci fi idea that could be seen as original. Our hero Jack Deth (played to perfection by Tim Thomerson) is a detective from the future who kills mindless trancers (zombies) and he has to go back in time to stop Whistler, the man who is turning people into trancers and is also trying to kill the high councils (the leaders from the future) long lost relatives so the high councils never would of existed at all. Sounds like a ripoff from the Terminator right? Right, but it is effective and highly entertaining. This marks the first movie staring Helen Hunt who plays the romantic lead opposite of Jack Deth. She plays a punkish girl who works as an elf for a mall Santa. The Science part of this fictional story is a little fuzzy but you overlook it because the acting is good and you believe in the characters and root for them to win. This movie produced 4 successful direct to video sequels with each one getting steadily worst. You can't compare this movie to Terminator or Blade Runner because it was filmed with a very low budget, but it did succeed in being highly entertaining for what it is, a low budget sci fi movie.
Crummy time travel thrillers proliferated like dandelions in the wake of The Terminator, but this one is at least tolerable, thanks to surprisingly good, straight action performances by comedian Tim Thomerson and a very young Helen Hunt who managed to produce good chemistry from a rather pedestrian script. They could have aimed for camp with this, but they tried to keep the science fiction and action thriller elements straight- faced and this was the right approach. Apocalyptic plot-lines and camp don't mix well. The low budget means that on an effects level the movie is pretty lean, but this is not a bad thing in that it at least manages to look urban gritty futuristic where necessary. Most of the action takes place in the present day (which was actually 1985), making the need for a futuristic look largely unnecessary - something The Terminator taught low budget filmmakers everywhere. Not a particularly good movie, but not an awful one either. There are worse ways to spend 90 minutes if you're a science fiction fan.
