If you don't like this, we can't be friends.
A lot more amusing than I thought it would be.
One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.
There are moments that feel comical, some horrific, and some downright inspiring but the tonal shifts hardly matter as the end results come to a film that's perfect for this time.
Along with 'Basic Instinct', this is the quintessential erotic thriller for me. 'Single White Female' is the standard format for how to do an erotic thriller, a textbook example, and the movie has all the good and bad that implies. It's a psychological character study, mainly focusing on the relationship of two single white females who live as roommates. Bridget Fonda plays the protagonist, the insecure and youthful Allison, and Jennifer Jason Leigh her roommate Hedy, who is a quick-tempered and manipulative country girl. The conflict between the characters ebbs and flows, and the movie poses questions about narcissistic behavior and infidelity. There's a bunch of nudity and sex, and some of it is an essential part of the story. One sex scene even directly leads to a character death, one that is really campy and funny. The story is a downward spiral and by the ending sequence the movie has turned into pretty much a slasher horror.
SINGLE WHITE FEMALE is one of the many psycho-thrillers that were popular in the early '90s after FATAL ATTRACTION made the genre fashionable. I was going to add 'worst' into that first sentence because I didn't like this film at all and it doesn't come close to others like THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE or BASIC INSTINCT. This has a good premise – being stalked by somebody who wants to be you – but the film is ruined thanks to poor execution and direction that strives for art house style but ultimately offers boredom rather than entertainment. One of my biggest problems with this film is that there's nobody to root for. Bridget Fonda plays it aloof and cold throughout, but I've seen her much better in other movies like KISS OF THE DRAGON or A SIMPLE PLAN, so this must have been intentional. She's one of those heroines where you don't give a fig what happens to her. Jennifer Jason Leigh reminded me of Juliette Lewis a little, although I think Juliette would have done the kooky angle a lot better; she's never frightening. Then there are repulsive supporting characters, like the jerk boyfriend (THE SHINING miniseries' Steven Weber), the slightly creepy upstairs neighbour, and the perverted boss. Nobody here is warm or appealing at all.The movie does have a couple of good moments, mainly in the violence that Leigh eventually wreaks. The dog-from-the-balcony scene is a goodie and the infamous stiletto scene makes a real impact (pun intended). Things also pick up for the elaborate climax, and the last half an hour was a lot better than the first hour. It's not enough to save a lacklustre movie that'll always be a 'could have been so much more' in my mind.
I thought the storyline of this film was pretty awful. I say, they thought that this would definitely look like the movie 'The Shining' and win lots of awards. It really doesn't go that far to be quite honest with you. Some people say it's odd, in my opinion, it actually is rather daft and stupid. I think weirder movies are rather good then non weird. I wouldn't like to be the one who sat the rest and didn't enjoy it. I sat down looking at this for 20 minutes and skipped to minutes of the credits. I would love to get those twenty minutes back but unfortunately, it's a human error you make when you hate something!I wouldn't consider people watching this, it's crap!
Barbet Schroeder follows up his masterpiece Barfly and his Oscar nomination for best director for Reversal of Fortune with this soapy, trashy thriller about an obsessive roommate. The whole story is telegraphed out from the moment Jennifer Jason Leigh starts acting like a wacko, which is pretty quickly and we just wait for the inevitable cat fight. The two leads are committed to this crummy material, but this is just a sleazy bore, even with the requisite nudity. I have nothing against Barbet Schroeder making a down and dirty exploitation romp, but Single White Female doesn't even deliver in the cheap thrills department.
