The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.

I'm no expert on Marvel - I likes me guardians of the galaxy and the odd X-men film, so I've no idea of what Man-Thing 'should' be like, but I get the feeling he should have been more something, because this film doesn't quite work, no matter what it was supposed to be.In order to save words and web space let me sum up the plot using buzz words only. Environmental destruction. Evil businessmen. Ancient Ethnic minority spirit. New Cop in town. Eco-warrior love interest. Ignorant rednecks. Spiritual native Americans. You get the picture. What annoyed me about the film was that the night scenes in the swamp were very well filmed, and yet instead of using that to create atmosphere the tension is broken up with clichéd sped-up footage that littered these film in the new millennium.Another moan from me is that the film, once it decides it's a horror film and not a superhero film, takes forever to show us Man-Thing! I don't give a crap about all the other folks, show us that actual monster. It's not a complete waste of time, however. It's kind of alright for the most part. They should have added in a bit more gore, took out the clichéd editing and fancy camera-work, and given us more beast. And that's my review of Derek Jarman's Blue.

In case you ever find yourself in that position, or you hear someone else, thinking that the Marvel Cinematic Universe films are weak or under-par or just simply *bad*, I encourage you to check out Man-Thing. Actually I don't because this would almost come across as a recommendation, and it's not that. It's about perspective: you can watch things like Thor 2 or one of the Amazing Spider-Man movies (and yes, Spider-Man 3 if you don't care for it), and realize 'yeah, well, at least it's not Man-Thing.' This is such a waste of time, and more than that a waste of potential - yes, potential - that it's barely on-par for the sludge that passes for Syfy channel movies of the week.Everything is stock here, everything. Stock opening with the horny teens having sex in the swamp and one of them getting killed (lots of blood, to be sure, but not a single f*** given to suspense); stock villain with his 'you Yankee Sheriff don't understand get outta my way' twang; stock lead who barely makes a different facial expression except constipated consternation; stock friend deputy who we know may not last long; stock backwoods "good ol' boy" yokels where the closest thing to a joke involves taking a s*** in the swamp at night (and then, ::GASP:: one of them falls in to what looks like other s***); laughably stock Indian guide who patiently exclaims over a montage about how the "Man Thing" came to be due to corporate man's interference with oil rigs and who knows what; and stock love interest who really becomes a love interest because it's about that time for the hero man to kiss the hero girl and for them to almost have sex at an importune time.Did I mention this movie is quite poor, because it is. And I think that it could have had potential as a) if it embraced it's dumbass B-movie roots and went for broader, or at least were more sincere in some other way, like with a script that went for crazier ideas or stakes, or b) if, I assume, they stuck closer to what Man-Thing actually is in the comics (I'd assume from what I've read from others reactions, I haven't yet read it though it comes from Steve Gerber who created Howard the Duck, that it's not close at all). Or maybe a stronger director with a better grasp on horror or comedy or horror-comedy. The best that Brett Leonard is able to muster for anything 'creative' or out of the box comes in super-fastly-whiplash-style editing to transition from, uh, one scene to another whenever it's time to get EDGY in that way that is terribly dated a decade on (though it was likely dated in 2005).The acting is equally stock as the actors, though as one thing to give the movie credit the actor playing the bat-s*** photographer who keeps popping up in the 'Dark Water' of the swamp was fairly entertaining. But aside from that no one is memorable, certainly no one who can inject some madness or life into the thing. It's trying to play it too straight and be too serious-minded, but it the director and crew don't have the skills (or budget) to give anything close to some actual terror or properly mounting suspense. It's all a lot of people wandering in dark swamps and then BOOM then comes the CGI 'Man-Thing'. Indeed the best thing about the movie is the title, which I'm sure at the time Marvel patted itself on the back and handed out giant cigars for the whole staff for the fact that they got a comic called Man-Thing.And it's not like I went into this wanting to hate it, at least not to this point (I suspected, given it was never released to theaters, to lower my expectations, but not to the point of bottom of the barrel). I want more raw, hard-R rated flicks from the likes of Marvel - the first two Blades and Punisher: War Zone embraced their B-movie roots and had good-to-decent directors behind them - but there needs to be a strong vision or something new to the table. Practically everything in Man-Thing, from the Indian environmental "messages" that feel somewhat coopted from *Swamp Thing* (and I'm sure with the comic that was intentional) to the small-town folk who are given the blandest, most generic 'Southern-good-ol'-f***-yeah' dialog, is telegraphed, rote, like things picked up off the dirty, un-vacuumed-for-15-years floor of a hack screen writing pig-pen floor. Even when we see the Man-Thing itself it feels disappointing, with the only thrill coming when it does something especially gory but that too isn't unexpected.Only for the most die-hard horror-gore-comic-book fans. Or if you want to get that perspective I mentioned earlier. Or if you like a villain with the last name "Schist". Get it? It sounded like it's called s***!

So I just watched it on the net and actually I didn't know this film existed, it just happened to show up in a list of Marvel film adaptations. It was actually not that bad considering that it's truly a B-movie, but pretty good, I was entertained and there was enough gore but not over done.Honestly I would like see more Marvel horror titles adapted for the big screen; there are so many great ones, Dracula, son of Satan, Morbius, Man-Wolf, Werewolf by Night, Lilith, Satana, I could go on and on.This could be a cool new direction for Marvel as well given the risk of Superhero film burn out.

Man-Thing is set in the small town of Bywater & starts as new Sheriff Kyle Williams (Matthew Le Nevez) arrives to begin his first day on the job taking over from the previous Sheriff who mysteriously disappeared along with several other local residents over the past few months. Straight away Sheriff Williams is called into action as he learns of an ongoing feud between rich oil industrialist Frederic Schist (Jack Thompson) & local environmentalists who are trying to stop Schist building more oil rigs in & around Bywater. Sheriff Williams learns that various bodies have been found in the swamps, mutilated bodies with plants growing from the inside out & that an ancient native American myth may be responsible for the killings. Sheriff Williams sets out to discover the truth & finds that the ancient legends are true & that a giant swamp monster is roaming the swamps killing any trespasser...This American Australian co-production was directed by Brett Leonard who also has a small part in the film as Val Mayerick & is based on the Marvel comic book character Man-Thing who first appeared in Savage Tales in 1971 & had gained his own self titled comic book by 1974, although I know little of the actual Man-Thing comic book this film apparently bears little resemblance to it. In the comic book a scientist named Ted Sallis fell into a swamp & mutated into Man-Thing because of chemicals he had developed while the script for the film has someone named Ted Sallis murdered by oil tycoon Schist & buried in the swamp & it's hinted that it's him who is Man-Thing although it's quite ambiguous. Although based on a superhero comic book it's hard to tell while actually watching it, there's no sense of justice or right or wrong & Man-Thing has no great motivation & generally just seems to kill anyone it comes across including a teenage boy in a boat who in all honestly wasn't doing anything wrong at all, also why kill the Deputy when again he was a good guy? Man-Thing feels much more like a Sy-Fy Channel creature feature with some monster roaming around killing bit part character's & the local Sheriff investigating the murders, at just over 90 minutes long Man-Thing has a decent pace but it gets repetitive & the native American magic nonsense is dull & predictable as the overall explanation. The character's are all clichéd, the local Sheriff, the pretty female teacher, a few Redneck goons & the big bad businessman villain. While Man-Thing is better than the usual creature feature it's not that great, it plods along & never really captivates or comes to life as large parts of the film just feature people walking around dark swamps at night & I don't understand why Man-Thing itself isn't fully revealed until past the 70 minute mark as I found myself sitting there just waiting for it to show up.Obviously quite similar to the DC Comics character Swamp Thing the two have much in common, often this film lowers itself to standard horror film clichés with teenagers killed, vague supernatural nonsense & a big monster which does look quite good actually. The CGI computer effects are better than I expected & Man-Thing looks quite good although is underused & is never anything more than a one dimensional monster rather than the complex character with depth that appeared in the comic books. Originally planned to go straight to video there were plans for Man-Thing to have a limited theatrical release which were dropped & it eventually premiered on the Sy-Fy Channel before being released on DVD. Apparently a test screening was held & half the audience walked out before the end, that says it all really.Originally to be filmed in New Orleans budget restraints forced a rethink & it was eventually shot in Sydney in Australia. The production values are pretty good & it looks quite slick with a nice tinted green colour to all the swamp scenes. The acting is alright, it's nothing special but the material isn't great so the actors didn't have much to work with.Man-Thing is more of a cheap Sy-Fy Channel creature feature than a Marvel comic book superhero film, in fact if you weren't aware of the Man-Thing origins then you wouldn't know this was based on a comic book by simply watching it. I suppose it passes 90 odd minutes & is well made but ultimately hollow & forgettable.
