Really Surprised!
Great movie! If you want to be entertained and have a few good laughs, see this movie. The music is also very good,
While it is a pity that the story wasn't told with more visual finesse, this is trivial compared to our real-world problems. It takes a good movie to put that into perspective.
The movie really just wants to entertain people.
During the failed Iranian hostage rescue, Captain Scott McCoy (Chuck Norris) disobeys order and goes back to pull a comrade from the wreckage. He quits in disgust. Five years later, two terrorists hijack an American plane leaving Athens forcing it to land in Beirut. Colonel Nick Alexander (Lee Marvin) leads Delta Force and McCoy is recalled on a mission to rescue the hostages. On the plane, the terrorists separate three Navy sailors and Jewish men from the rest of the passengers.Other than Norris being heroic in Iran, the first half is mostly about the harrowing hijacking. It's uncomfortably scary and a little too real. It has a couple of effective turns. The rescues are a little too convenient considering the way the movie is set up in the first half. Any realism is gone. The story would probably work better if everybody stays on the plane and they never leave Beirut.
90% of cast and crew on this film were Israeli and was obvious there intention was to portray 'Arabs' in a bad light. The movie sucked, the second is a lot better. How common is it to see Hollywood portray Arabs in the wrong way judging an entire nation of almost 2 billion people by the actions of a few. Its like judging Christianity based on the actions of the KKK....See my point? The second movie is much better. Contains a much better realistic storyline, better action, actors don't all look constipated and audio seems to be much better to name but a few improvements.
When a passenger jet carrying US citizens is hijacked by Lebanese terrorists (led by an almost unrecognisable Robert Forster), commando Scott McCoy (Chuck Norris) comes out of retirement to rejoin his old unit, The Delta Force, who are sent to rescue the hostages and kick terrorist ass.The cover for my DVD of 80s actioner The Delta Force shows tough guys Chuck Norris and Lee Marvin wielding massive rocket launchers (the older star's head clumsily photo-shopped onto someone else's body); it's an image that suggests an excess of poorly executed gung-ho action, a film light on plot but heavy on mindless death and destruction. In the final act, that's definitely what is delivered—logic takes a back seat and lots of s**t gets blown up—but what might surprise many is just how well handled the movie's earlier hostage situation scenes are Israeli director Menahem Golan—obviously no fan of the Lebanese—depicts his hijackers as utterly wretched scum willing to commit unspeakable atrocities in order to achieve their goals (they don't call them terrorists for nothing!). This level of unflinching realism makes the scenes on board the plane extremely tense and effectively unsettling—which makes it a huge shame when the whole thing devolves into a ridiculous mess of silly shootouts and OTT explosions, all accompanied by one of the most uninspired and repetitive scores imaginable (Alan Silvestri should be ashamed). What starts out as a gripping drama ends with the enemy being wiped out by Norris on a motorbike equipped with amazingly accurate missile launchers, which is nowhere near as much fun as it sounds.
The Delta Force is, if you didn't already know, an elite band of American soldiers who do everything from rescue hostages to perform excessive wheelies on motorbikes while pursuing planes on runways. So, when some nasty ol' terrorists take a plane-load of innocent civilians hostage, the government calls in Lee Marvin and Chuck Norris. The terrorists don't stand a chance. The current trend in Hollywood film-making is serious, serious, serious. Franchises like The Bourne Identity, Nolan's Batman saga and post-Brosnan James Bond are dark and moody. Sure, they're great films, but are they fun? Do you really find yourself cheering and laughing as you watch? I didn't. But I sure did with the Delta Force. There's no way the Delta Force can be taken totally seriously. The Delta Force are basically indestructible and the terrorists unable to hit anything with their hopelessly inadequate machine guns (think the Stormtroopers in Star Wars). Chuck Norris therefore guns, hits and generally blows up hundreds of bad guys without even ruffling his beard.Yes, it's daft. Yes, it's unrealistic. And, yes, it's probably a bit dated and maybe even a little politically incorrect in its representations of certain 'non-western' cultures. But, if you can put all that aside, it's also damn good fun. My one regret is that I watched it alone. It's the perfect movie to invite the guys round and have a few beers to.Seriously, they don't make 'em like they used to. Tragic.
