Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
Blistering performances.
An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
Having selected the movie because of an interest in "alternate history", I wasn't prepared for the preachy religious nature of the film, nor the anachronistic technology -- which wasn't explained, by the way. I'm accustomed to nearly every movie mentioning religion or God occasionally; it's something people think about, so okay. But Beyond The Mask was fraught with Christianity's "salvation" message, something that wasn't mentioned in any online description I'd read beforehand. On a somewhat-related note, there was also a surprising amount of violence for a PG film, though little of it was bloody/gory. It didn't help that the writing seemed sub-par -- perhaps because it had to be bent around the "come to God" theme and to make sure religious viewers weren't offended in any way. In places, the actors were impressive, but most of the time the acting seemed wooden.
This film has some great adventure scenes sprinkled thru-out, and I especially liked the rooftop chase across a fantastic set showing the evening skyline of colonial America. I am a sucker for "period pieces" and it is obvious research was done to get the "feel" of the era, with accurate depictions of forts, prison ships, cargo ships, and the historic locations themselves. John Rhys-Davies always plays a strong part, but either he did not try to steal any scenes with his presence, or the rest of the cast was just that good! The story is credible, (not so far fetched from the tale of what we know about John Paul Jones and his past).Hard to imagine such a great film might be made with such entertainment value, yet the special effects did NOT detract from the acting, and the film had NO nudity!! (In this day and age, LOL)...The only real issue I had with "credibility" is when a structure is being destroyed and two of the main characters, having just escaped from it, took a little too much time, (IMHO) to resume swimming to get out of the area... Splinter city.Loved the film.
I'm not sure why this movie got so many bad reviews - perhaps because of the moral message no longer appreciated in this age. This movie did not preach!!It's a movie of courage, redemption and love.It kept me on the edge of my seat and there were many unexpected twists and turns. The special effects were great. Some criticized the acting. I'm not an expert on acting by many means. I can only say there are few movies that make me feel as if I'm in the moment-this succeeded. I was greatly entertained. There is violence but otherwise PG.
Seen a good historical adventure movie after a long time. Was a good fun movie to watch. If one is ready to ignore some of the logical abrasions in the story line then it would be a great watch.Would not recommend it for anyone looking to find a very accurate historical adventure, though. There is a great deal of illogical things that happen in the story. What keeps one glued to the movie is a twist in the story every 20 minutes. While the story in between the twists is predictable it is still fun to watch it unfold.Would recommend as a family movie.Looking forward to a sequel.
