Instead, you get a movie that's enjoyable enough, but leaves you feeling like it could have been much, much more.
It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
True to its essence, the characters remain on the same line and manage to entertain the viewer, each highlighting their own distinctive qualities or touches.
I'm a highly skeptical horror and science fiction fan (as two separate genres). I've seen a ton of them and a shockingly high proportion of them are utter failures and disappointments. So I went in with the lowest expectations. And by god it did not fail me. This was by no means the worst film I've seen but it was one of the biggest MEHs.At the beginning it was average until the sheriff asks the girl "who did this to you?" and she answers "who do you think!" Then there was the point when Lex gets out of the car and just stands there when all her horrified friends are screaming for her to save herself and get back in the car. From then on it was nothing more than a horrific nosedive straight down.I'm not going to go into the bad acting, plot holes, horrible dialogue, etc. There are enough reviews on here doing that. But what I will say is this: unless you are one of those movie-goers with a voracious appetite for everything sci-fi/horror, or both regardless of whether it's good or bad, take a hard pass on this on this one. There are other films out there worthy of your time and money.
I scored the film quite highly because I genuinely enjoyed about 80% of, but I went into it knowing it wasn't exactly going to be a groundbreaker.Without wanting to give too much away, it incorporates a lot of UFO mythology and people who are into that kind of thing will probably enjoy it, as I did. The special effects are very well done, for a film without a huge budget and the UFO's are genuinely ominous and 'other - worldly'.The plot isn't too bad really, it ends in an interesting way that you probably won't expect and there are some scenes in the last 20 minutes that are actually quite spectacular. It's bad points though - the actors are a bit annoying and not very endearing. The main couple are quite nice and their story plays out well, but everybody else in it seems to just be there to add filler to the plot. One of the guys in it is actually very annoying, from start to unfortunate end. It's all a bit loud and flashy and over the top in parts as well. The musical score is definitely not up to a very high standard in my opinion.I think it deserves a little more respect than some reviewers have given it - but not much. ;-)
I spent the whole movie trying to understand what they were trying to do with the whole thing. Was it intentionally so cliché filled, trying to be corny? Or was it trying to take itself seriously? I kept asking myself because the movie does nothing new with the aliens, in-fact, it's trying to copy X-Files with generic aliens and even a reference at the end. But then, the movie isn't smart enough to make fun of all this and looks like it's actually taking itself seriously. Then there's the ending. You know how in LOTR you kept getting fade-outs thinking "this is the end" but it suddenly keeps on going? This movie did that 3 times in a row where it just refused to end at the "right" moment and then kept making it worse by showing how dumb it can be, till the end. It's so bad that I rated it 5/10 and went down to 3/10 while writing the review. Pray that I don't go any lower..
In my opinion, this film is exceptional for it's type, and doesn't deserve the low scores. While it is a typical teen horror flick in many ways, it isn't pat. Personally, I don't care for the teen horror genre, I cringed through the gore, and I had to do some fast-forwarding because I'm impatient. That said, I was very impressed with the detail and layers involved, as well as the acting, which was superb. It's not easy to show terror, but these kids emoted fear very convincingly.Someone stated that they felt the alien was shown too soon, but I disagree. I hate films where you have to wait until the end, and then they show a split second of the antagonist. It was satisfying to have several good glimpses. Most movies of this type would have ended with the survivor going on with her life after the craft took off – but this one continued with an unexpected "insider" experience. Once again, you think that when that event ends with the protagonists' joyful reunion, that the movie would end and the credits would roll. Not so! There is even yet ANOTHER unexpected twist, AND a surprise cameo of a character based on a popular sci-fi series! This film may seem ordinary and predictable on the surface: Teens at a cabin at night, power going out, terror, etc. – but it was very well fleshed out and the ending proffered a rewarding twist for UFO and "conspiracy theory" buffs. In summary, Extraterrestrial is not my cup of entertainment, but it deserves high marks for it's production, twists, and performance.
