That was an excellent one.
Better Late Then Never
If the ambition is to provide two hours of instantly forgettable, popcorn-munching escapism, it succeeds.
Great example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.
Now if you were or maybe still are a big fan of the soaps, especially those from Mexico, than you may see more in this. Or you may be offended of course. But this one shot idea (no pun intended) loses quite a lot of its driving power. There are certain scenes that do have a lot of fun and a lot of material that are entertaining. But maybe I'm spoiled. And I don't just mean other Will Ferrell movies, but also a movie called "Tears of the Black Tiger", which while paying homage to cinema and Westerns and different other aspects, really walked the fine line perfectly. This movie has a lot shout-outs too (my sub-woofer had a lot to work with) and there is a lot of violence of course. And it's almost entirely in Spanish, if you didn't know that already. Watch but don't expect too much
We start out good with an Oscar-worthy theme song performed by Christina Aguilera. The soundtrack is pretty good in general. But the film goes down from then on...The budget must've been really low since many of the locations are models and stages. But at least they make fun of their low quality, like in the White Cat sequences. The scenes are overacted, sometimes decent, but at least it was intentional since it was made in soap opera style. Amazingly, Will Ferrell can speak Spanish very fluently. Nick Offerman's Spanish was OK.The story is boring, it only becomes interesting in the wedding scene and on forth which is the 2nd half of the movie. I think what most ruined the movie was the extremely cheesy love story. I guess it's justified since it's basically a soap opera. Besides who wouldn't fall for the lovely Sonia played by the Genesis Rodriguez? This is one of the toughest movies I've had to rate. It had to go down between a 5/10 (Meh) and a 6/10 (OK). So I officially rate it 5.5/10
'Casa de mi Padre', a Spanish-Language American-Comedy, is an average watch. It's prime focus is on comedy, but sadly, the jokes are limited only till it's first-hour! 'Casa de mi Padre' Synopsis: Scheming on a way to save their father's ranch, the Alvarez brothers find themselves in a war with Mexico's most feared drug lord.'Casa de mi Padre', despite it's crisp running time of just 84-Minutes, fails to leave much of an impression. The narrative is ordinary. The jokes in the first-hour work, but the second-hour disappoints. Andrew Steele's Screenplay is funny, but only in parts. Matt Piedmont's Direction is standard. Performance-Wise: Will Ferrell is the sole saving grace. He's earnest & believable all through. The rest of the performances range from average to below average. On the whole, 'Casa de mi Padre' underwhelms.
I will be fair and say that Casa de mi Padre was an inspired idea. Will Ferrel truly took on a daring responsibility to widely release a Spanish speaking movie under his company banner as well as speaking Spanish throughout the film. The result is a mixed bag. I really admired its homage of the Sergio Leone spaghetti western meets Telenovela meets Grindhouse flick. It took advantage of this by using some really clever sight gags. Some of the action scenes were pretty kick-ass. Also, since this is a Spanish speaking movie, the subtitles leave room for some hilarious reading! But the film's efforts can at times feel tiresome. The first half of the movie is almost joke less. Almost as if the film was trying to rely on the fact that Will Ferrel speaking Spanish will be funny enough to carry a movie. Which it doesn't. The scenes without jokes fall totally flat and provides nothing to the audiences interest. To this effect, I turned off the movie half way through watching it the first time, convinced that I had watched a truly awful comedy. But I gave it a second chance, and to my surprise, I liked it. But lets face the facts, this is a forgettable Will Ferrel flick that will go among the ranks of "Semi-Pro" and "Kicking and Screaming" as one of his worst films. Rent it if you want to.
