Hello Herman

Set in the not so distant future, in Any Town USA, sixteen-years-old Herman Howards makes a fateful decision. He enters his suburban school and kills thirty nine students, two teachers, and a police officer. Just before his arrest, he emails his idol, famous journalist Lax Morales, sending him clips of the shootings captured with Herman's own digital camera. In the clips Herman tells Lax, "I want to tell my story on your show". Lax, haunted by his own past, is now face to face with Herman.

Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.

One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.

Please do yourself a favor and watch something else.Anything else. This movie. Man, just when I didn't think the film could get any worse it did. I'm not sure who I should blame first. The director or the screenwriter. I think that the director takes the cake ( by that I mean the blame) for this movie. Mostly because of the horrible acting. Did anyone else see the crazy blonde lady that looked like she walked off SNL? How does a director let something like that happen? and the two lead men? Man did they try. Oh they tried to give us something. But Garret looked like a Disney kid who got lost. Another painful to watch performance came from the director herself staring as none other than boys mother. I think that out of the whole film only two people gave worth while performances. One was the female police offer who had two minutes of screen time and the beautiful Latina lead. They truly did a really good job when you look at the film as a whole. If only they hadn't been apart of this. The film lacked all vision. Nowhere at anytime could I see what they hell the filmmakers where trying to do. I wish that a film on this subject would have gone farther. Gave us something to really think about. But instead it gave us corny character names and cringe worth dialogue. The editing on this film was so amateurish I thought that I was watching the work of a film school drop out. The editor clearly was trying to use Lee Smith's tricks ( Lee Smith editor for many of Christopher Nolan's films) for flash backs and quick cuts. Not a single time was it done properly. Thank god Norman had the walking dead to go back to after this train wreck of a film. Over all the film is completely half baked.

To start, Hello Herman is a superb movie starring Norman Reedus from the walking dead, directed by Michelle Danner, a renowned acting coach from Los Angeles. Everything from the cinematography to the acting was excellent. The situations that take place in Hello Herman also takes place in real life, which made me emotionally connected to the movie. Hello Herman made me feel that people from all different areas of life need to love more. Love is one of the main feelings that this movie lacked. Actually, many occurrences that took place could have been avoided if there had been more love and understanding in this movie. Hello Herman teaches viewers the value of family bonding and to bond with others in general. To some it may not seem like that big of a deal to bond with others, however, it is really important to stimulate your mind by socializing with others rather than to numb your mind with video games. This movie is a perfect example of that, it is a reminder that video games have a reset button, while in real life you don't. It also shows what can happen when families don't bond or show love to each other. While watching this movie, I put myself in Herman's shoes and imagined what I will do if everything that happened to him happened to me. I probably would not have gone to the extent that Herman did, but I would have searched for ways to resolve the issues that I was facing. Overall, Hello Herman is a great movie to have been made because it shows a real life situation that goes on everyday, but most of the time it goes unheard of. I will definitely recommend Hello Herman to others.

Michelle Danner's Hello Herman is truly thought provoking. The film's primary timeline follows the aftermath of a tragic school shooting, and, most startlingly, does so from the point of view of the killer himself (played by Garrett Backstrom). Herman (Backstrom) agrees to do interviews with the film's main character, Lax (Reedus), and it is through the course of these interviews that the full story is uncovered. The film is truly powerful, and does what I think many films are afraid to do, which is showing both sides of the story. I think its true success lies in the fact that it never forgives Herman necessarily, but highlights the humanity behind his role, and reminds viewers that the key to stopping these incidents of violence is not more violence, but perhaps more understanding. That's how I saw it, anyway. Excellent movie, a must-see.

This film truly is thought provoking. I was pulled in the second it started and I never lost interest. It really does raise awareness of teenagers and what they experience in school and at home. A lot of what the main character feels is disconnect from the people at his school and never really truly fitting in. He was just a lost kid who didn't know what else to do to make people actually notice him and he decided to act upon this with violence. Some major issues are prevalent in Hello Herman and in society. Issues of violence, bullying and chaotic family life. A very interesting aspect of the film was the whole concept of how Herman devalued his life. When people see something like this happen they immediately point the finger at the killer and they want to see him suffer. The film reflects what's been happening in our society and doesn't let up on making a point.
