Fantastic!
what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
The film may be flawed, but its message is not.
"Mad Max" . . . "Yahoo Serious." Both films demonstrated Australian film-making's love for oddball characters in their movies. With the former, they struck gold; with the latter, they dumped a turd. Guess which category this movie falls down under? So, . . . there are meteorites that smash into people making them zombies . . . oh, and, then, aliens show up . . . and, there's this country-bumpkin guy who apparently has experienced this before and has been preparing for this event (or, these events) . . . and, the aliens are beaming people up into the clouds and putting them into some kind of stasis . . . and, then, the aliens leave and the whole "zombie-thing" starts all over again. Throw into this mishmash of nonsense a bunch of Aussie "oddball" characters. By now, I would have thought, that the Australians would have realized that this type of humor doesn't translate very well anywhere else -- even in the Anglophone world. There's a fine line between "oddball funny" and "oddball stupid and obnoxious." Alas, Aussie comedy is still trying to figure that out.Don't waste your time. Really, . . . don't.
This is one of those movies that is so bad, it's actually kinda good. Watching this put a grin on my face, not because of how good it is but because how cheesy and hilarious the dialogue is. It's like it's going in a sort of serious direction, but the actors themselves don't seem to take any of it seriously. Which is a good thing, cause if they tried their best to act serious the movie just wouldn't be good at all. The dialogue is even hysterical at times, not because it's clever in anyway but because it seems like everything is so darn sarcastic. Everything about this movie is just downright ridiculous and silly and the characters actions and reactions just doesn't make any sense what so ever. It's basically a sci-fi zombie flick, where meteorites turn people into zombies and the living survivors are trying to stay alive. Anyone can tell when the uber cheesy music start to play that this isn't a serious zombie flick, nor should it be viewed as one. Even if it's one of those ridiculous movie, it got a bit annoying watching the survivors try and kill the zombies by shooting them in the chest instead of aiming for the head for the long portion of the film. Overall it's basically a very flawed movie that should be watched with friends in order to get some laugh out of it and make comments during the movie.6.1/10
As horror/sci-fi movies go, this is not one of the best. It is, however, pretty fun. Clearly inspired by some of the earlier Peter Jackson work, Undead features zombies, aliens, crazy people with guns, stupid people with guns, alpha male and alpha female and lots of blood. This is the good part. The bad part is that most of the actors involved are playing like they are having fun, but can't really act. Also, for a 2003 movie I expected slightly better special effects. The script was interesting enough, even if a bit confusing at times, but the biggest failure of the film was its inability to choose between comedy, horror and sci-fi. I don't doubt that reality has a bit of both, but in Undead, the transition just didn't work.Bottom line: I did watch the movie as it was done by the same people that made DayBreakers, which had an awesome 10 minutes start. Unfortunately, it's about the same amount of time this movie has that is really interesting, the rest being average, at best.
...who really, really ought to know better than to provide deceptive grist for the blurb mills, "Undead" takes a somewhat interesting idea and then thoroughly botches the execution of it. With a cast of unknowns (most of whom will remain that way) and a script straight out of high school, "Undead" is to be lauded only for what it achieves on a relatively shoestring budget, and really, it's not all that much.Meteorites plummet to earth in and around a small town in Australia, and those who are struck by them become flesh-eating zombies (and presumably capable of infecting others, although this is never demonstrated, to the best of my recollection). Shortly thereafter, an alien craft descends to vacuum up the afflicted in beams of light in order to cure them. Okay. This is an interesting concept, but it's handled ineptly by the Spierling Brothers writing/directing/producing team; they seem more interested in bringing their CGI effects to the screen via their home computers. All well and good, but without a script worthy of merit, all the CGI and special make-up fx in the world can't hold an audience's interest. Staged and directed with ham firmly in fist, "Undead" simply can't transcend its poorly-constructed story and horrendous dialogue, nor the limits of its actors. Were he alive, Ted Sturgeon would be nodding his head in agreement. And, yes, Tony "Fangoria" Timpone and Harry "Ain't It Cool News" Knowles ought to be forced to watch this one a hundred times in a row as penance for their fawning.
