Admirable film.
While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
The acting in this movie is really good.
The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
After the brilliant finale to Battlestar Galactica, I had mixed feelings about watching its addendum "The Plan". On one hand, I wanted another couple hours of watching "the old gang" again. On the other, though, the ending was so great that I didn't want it to be tarnished in any form. Ultimately, while "The Plan" doesn't specifically take away from the incredible run of BSG, it also doesn't add anything interesting to the overall story, either.Basically, "The Plan" is the BSG writers' way of covering their collective butts because of the whole "Cylons have a plan" quote referenced in the opening titles. That plan was never really expanded upon during the run of the show, so this little film tries to flesh out the Cylon point of view. The trouble, however, is that "The Plan" amounts to little more than minutiae in the background of an incredible show. BSG is such a big-concept show that all the "background stuff" just doesn't really have a place in the cannon. It doesn't help that, in "The Plan", the Cylons are reduced to little more than guerrilla warriors after their initial attack fails to wipe out all of humanity. As such, the character-development in this installment is pitiful compared to the human-Cylon relations during the series. The only reason I can give this set a two-star rating is that, on a couple of occasions, it gives some insight into why an event happened or what a character was thinking. Sadly, those moments are few and far between.Overall, then, I can even go so far as to say that "The Plan" is not at all required watching for BSG fans. Most fans will watch because they can't get enough, but at no time does "The Plan" offer any plots, character development, action, or storyline that even remotely resemble the emotion and splendor of the BSG series. It is kind of sad that this dud will be the last taste of BSG that viewers will get. Thus, unless you can't help yourself, skip "The Plan" and continue to bask in the greatest of the regular series airing and its incredible finale.
Whilst 'The Plan' well made and not terrible, we find out a couple of new things but the idea and story isn't nearly as good as it should be. The script fails to ignite and there is understandably a lot of reused footage. The acting is good, especially from Dean Stockwell who really holds the story together. The special effects are good but there are no big battles, the score is subtle most of the time, occasionally the camera is a bit to unsteady but that is just a personal thing. Editing is OK, not really exciting. I didn't hate any part of it but it didn't excite me at all either. A bit disappointing really.Really I would say that this film is for Battlestar Gallactica completists. Hopefully Battlestar will do a film explaining all the stuff they didn't bother to explain about Star Buck but somehow I doubt that will happen.
Loved it, however it is one for the real fans. The CGI, was pretty cool and stayed true to the original concept, The initial nuclear holocaust is done particularly well and portrays the scale much better than in the series.Galactica's strength right throughout the run (IMO), came from the character arcs, the writing and of course the portrayal by the actors. This is where The Plan wins my vote, it fully realises and better portrays the true nature and motivations of the Cylon model characters. Dean Stockwell as Cavil is brilliant. I was a bit disappointed with his character in the series, I thought he was more sarcastic than actually evil, the story certainly needed a true villain, however in The Plan he doesn't disappoint.Sure there's a lot of re-cycled scenes but who cares, if you're getting a new dimension to the story it's all good.Big thanks to Eddie Olmos & Jane Espenson for giving us this additional dimension. Also I love the way, in the directors commentary, that Eddie makes a real effort to try and thank every last film crew member, you can tell that he is a really nice, genuine guy and cares passionately about the Galactica brand. Bravo.
If this ran in October of '09 then my wife and I missed it. A little surprising since SciFi (or whatever it's called now) is a channel we generally keep our eye on.Since the series is over and we can't get any more BSG, then I very much disagree with the nay-sayers. Maybe they think a TV SHOW is supposed to make them tea or fix their frakkin' car. No, it's amusement and we thought it weaved an interesting thread through the series, and showed some amusing goings-on that were heretofore unknown. It focused on the cylon models that didn't get as much face time in the series, and those actors were worthy of the attention. Yes, it seemed like maybe there was some footage that might have been canned during a given episode, but it wasn't because it sucked, but because an episode lasts 42 minutes (mol) and they usually shoot much more. The Plan was still part and parcel the storyline we craved and the characters we had grown to love or hate. And it had its dark places. It seemed like they were going to address the mystery of the phantom ship in the "33" episode, which was a great one, but that not happening was my only real disappointment.Try not to over-think it. If you liked BSG, then you will like The Plan.
