A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.

In my marathon of Disney sequels, this movie is the second film I feared the most (the other one being Hunchback of Notre Dame 2). I have seen this movie as a kid, so I sort of knew I was expecting. But after ten years I did not remember much of this film, showing how bland and forgettable these movies are.I really enjoy the first one. It was the movie that give us the classics of the Disney Renaissance, an new kind of Disney princes in line with the second feminist wave (with Ariel) and the Broadway style that Disney still uses in their musicals. It has a great story, great songs, fantastic animation and every character is funny and memorable. This movie has none of the things that the original has. Let's start with the story. Ariel and Eric celebrate the birth of their daughter Melody, but then Morgana, the crazy sister of Ursula (yes, it happened), threatened her in order to get the trident of king Triton. To protect Melody, Ariel won't let her come close to the sea, even building a wall around the water. 12 years later and Melody is a person who likes water and simply ignore the wall. She finds out that she is part of the underwater kingdom of Triton and hates Ariel for not telling about it. She runs away and comes across Morgana and she gives her fins in exchange of the trident. As you can see, it is the same story of the first movie, but than backwards. What makes the plot predictable from beginning to end, with no originality what so ever. it makes you questioning why you watch this movie instead of the masterpiece of the original. The animation is not the worst I have ever seen (not after I watched the animated Titanic trilogy, Food Fight! and the video Biringquedo movies), but it is cheap and lazy for Disney standards. The design of the characters are sometimes creepy, with Ariel (one of the hottest female lead characters made by Disney) being the creepiest of them all. Most of the colors are too bright and don't look as natural as in the original.Speaking of characters, thy are all either bland and forgettable, or the kind that you hate because they are not like thy were in the original. Ariel somehow didn't understand the problems of Melody, even when thy are the same problems she had in the first movie. Prince Eric is just there so people don't question about why he is not in this film, he practically does nothing. Melody is annoying, bland and has no original personality. And then you have Tip and Dash, ho are rip offs of Timon and Pumba. Thy are there because Disney has an reputation of great comedic side characters (in their classic film made by people who know how to make a movie). Morgana is one of the worst villains of all time. She is basically an replacement of Ursula (and voiced by the same actress as the original) and showed us that the sister of the old villain want to have revenge plot, Does not work in the first place. There is nothing to say about the songs. Thy are just bland and uninspired (Howard Ashman is luckily unable to see what has happened to the movie that started his true fame). The first song makes me want to stop watching this film, after I was only watching it for 5 seconds!!!Just stay away from this movie. Stick to the original classics instead of the unnecessary sequels.

It's been many years since Ariel left the depths of the ocean and married her Prince Charming; but now their journey continues with the birth of their daughter, Melody. Completely isolated from her family, in order to protect Melody from Ursula the Sea Witch's sister Morgana, Ariel now longs to pull down the castle walls and return to the twinkling blue. By the time Melody has turned twelve, she begins to suspect Ariel is hiding something, and begins her own quest for answers. Making friends along the way and finding out her family's long awaited secret; but at a price. It's a sweet movie, I love the mother/daughter element because it makes it relatable to the average viewer, and I did understand it from both perspectives. Very good songs, interesting character progression, awesome movie for your own little water babies!

I watched this film from the beginning at a summer leisure scheme when I was 14 and it had a promising start but I couldn't watch all of it because other young people were playing noisily around me. Upon watching the Nostalgia Chick's 'Top 10 Worst Disney Sequels,' where she placed this at no. 6, I decided to give it another try after having purchased the triple DVD pack containing the Diamond Edition of the original, this one and the prequel. When I watched this in full, I was more satisfied with it than my first viewing despite its flaws. The animation is smooth and good for a sequel but the colours are overly bright in certain scenes and hurt my eyes. While the majority of the original voice cast have returned (unlike the 'Peter Pan' and' 'Cinderella' sequels), Flounder's voice is significantly different from that in the original since he is older and it sounds as if he has a cold but his children are cute as is baby Melody. While I'm on the subject of the voice work, Undertow sounded a little like Mr Krabs from 'SpongeBob SquarePants' since they were both voiced by Clancy Brown (also the voice of Dr Neo Cortex in the Crash Bandicoot games). The voices from Ariel and Eric were fine but I found Melody's a bit grating to start with. In spite of this, I liked the concept of her wanting to go under the sea because it made me see her as a reversed version of her mother and I liked her song 'For A Moment' especially the funny line about her wrinkly fingers. The beginning and ending songs were rather good but the one by Tip and Dash (who I thought were Morgana's assistants before I saw this film) was mostly forgettable and I prefer the original 'Part of Your World' to the version played over the end credits. Further to the original, there are parts of it that this film reminded me of such as Melody forgetting about her 12th birthday party (it made no sense that she was referred to as a teenager) whilst collecting sea artifacts in a similar manner to Ariel forgetting about the concert whilst collecting human bits and bobs and Melody swimming in loops during 'For a Moment' just like Ariel did during 'Part of Your World.' Another notable reference to the original is the scene where Chef Louie chases Sebastian at Melody's party while the orchestra plays the Can-Can music. If I could pick out any other gripes, these would be the dialogue being cheesy in parts (especially Morgana hoping she hasn't missed the cake and ice cream at the celebration of Melody's arrival), the blinking sound effects being a tad cartoonish for this film due to it being made by TV animators and Cloak and Dagger being silly assistants to Morgana (probably the most uninspired Disney villain since she looks like a slimmer version of Ursula) since they chuckle every so often, don't talk and are not as creepy as Flotsam and Jetsam. There are more positive aspects of the dialogue such as "old fish tales" being the sea equivalent to old wive's tales and a tuna colada being an underwater version of a piña colada and Undertow was more intimidating than Cloak and Dagger. All in all this isn't quite as good as the original but it still had most of the original voice actors and a decent storyline. 8/10.

I loved the characters much more in this movie than the original! Although the animation had brighter colours and a brilliant storyline, the thing that let me down was the songs. In the first movie the songs were really catchy due to the work of Alan Menken and that's what I loved about the film but in the second movie there weren't as many songs and most of them were love songs. The characters were much better including the villain who was a skinnier version of the first movie's villain, and i thought using Pat Carroll's voice for this character was a really wise choice and it would've been nice if she had taken part in the third movie because she has an extremely powerful voice for a villain and it may have been nice if she did Marina Del Ray, but Sally did a great job anyway! This movie wasn't better than the original due to the songs and the running time but was a bit better than the third.
