Simply A Masterpiece
It's not great by any means, but it's a pretty good movie that didn't leave me filled with regret for investing time in it.
It's a good bad... and worth a popcorn matinée. While it's easy to lament what could have been...
Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
The main thing is that it's objectively a good movie: the acting is good, the movie looks like it was made for Instagram (obviously, the point), the issues raised here are very relevant nowadays. To sum it up, it is a good movie.Still, I cannot say I will ever want to watch it again or that I enjoyed it that much in the first place. The reason for that (my incredibly subjective reason) is that there is nothing that revealing. The issues raised in the movie (loneliness, social media addiction, its shallowness, and the users' search for that shallowness and faux perfection) are all "right", they are all serious problems able to ruin lives or at least distort your view of life. However, most of us clearly understand it, and thus the plot was perfectly predictable because it's a mirror of the current situation in the world - how can it not be predictable? Summing it up, despite all the highs of the movie, to me, it looked like a high schooler's moralistic essay: all the right thoughts, all the right intentions, but far from being as non-conformist or groundbreaking and revealing as the author believes.
This film is not a light fluffy take on social media addiction--it gets creepy and heavy at times, but through a darkly comedic lens. The characters have complexity and depth, and have sympathetic qualities without being blameless. It is very relatable to younger generations, and shows how damaging taking social media personas so seriously can be. My only quibble is I wish the characters' epiphanies could have been more fleshed out. 10 stars go out to O'Shea Jackson, who gave such relief with his absolutely lovable character.
Though it might seem like the main character is the antagonist in this comedy drama, towards the end you'll come to view her differently. At the beginning of the movie, we see that her obsessive need to end her friendlessness and solitude has damaged her psychologically, leading her to attack a woman who has just got married.Plaza's portrayal of Ingrid perfectly demonstrates how desperate this bid to make friends has become. Yet, despite the comedy element weaving its way through the plot, the dramatic side of the story is never neglected. It is keenly felt in two specific scenes in the movie: the one where she returns to an empty house after her mother had died - having been in a psychiatric hospital - and the one where Taylor Sloane, the second woman Ingrid has tried to befriend, confronts her. The latter outcome arises from the actions of Taylor's vain, smartarse, obnoxious brother. If this were a thriller, Ingrid would be painted as the crazy, villainous stalker. However, in this dark comedy, the director and writer take the bold step of making Ingrid the victim. That what makes this scene the more tragic of the two I singled out - she is emotionally ripped to pieces by the people she was allegedly stalking. This plainly illustrates that Ingrid Is far from being a psycho - she's just someone who sadly can't differentiate between a username on someone's social media account from being an actual friend. This take on the cyber stalker film offers a fresh view on the person doing the stalking. Through Plaza's mesmerising performance, we get to see her motivation and her soul-destroying obsession to be someone's friend.
Made it to the 50min mark before i said "enough".I am probably not the right audience = MALE, SANE, SELF ASSURED.I imagine the right audience will love it. Definitely well written and acted. A very insightful look into our 'social' media addictions.Maybe if i find myself in the right mood, i will finish it.
