So much average
It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
This movie feels like it was made purely to piss off people who want good shows
It looks a little cheap and the army base is unconvincing. The aspect ratio is ugly. The sound is fine. The practical effects are totally awesome. Technical ample would be my summary. This movie is insane. If you are into piercings then you would love this. The characters are nuts but fascinating. It matches the nutty gore. I love how insane this movie is. It is funny, gory, stupid and so entertaining. This is the craziest stuff ever. Up there with The Evil Dead (1981) and Braindead (1992).
Return of the living dead finally grows a pair to investigate the source that caused the zombie risings in the first two films the military. The set seems fake for a high classified substance to dangerous to let loose and the security lacks if two teenagers can sneak in without setting off alarms. What I appreciate from this installment is incorporating a Romeo and Juliett subplot into the script allowing it a chance for substance and character development. Kurt standing up to his father, running away and doing anything for his last fair no matter how grotesque she becomes. A father who will search heaven and the bowels of hell for his only child was touching. The special effects were actually amazing for low budget, probably accounts for the poor scenes, as Julie mutilated her body becoming a dominatrix of terror and the poor victims being ingested by our favorite juggernauts. Followed by synthetic music you could find on any lifetime movie. The ending was anticlimactic for one thing they didn't have a big brawl between the undead and the living it was leading up to. The young couple predictability ended up dying instead of living apart and the military set never reached it's full potential. Other then that it was an enjoying thrill ride.
I recall wanting to rent something cheesy and campy for a weekend alone and came across Return of the Living Dead III. I knew it had to be better than part 2 (which I consider the worst zombie movie). I expected a lot of skin, a lot of gore, a lot of comedy, and not much in regards to plot. What I got was some skin, a lot of gore, no comedy, and a fairly decent plot. True, some of the plot shenanigans were fairly predictable, and I think the writers were not too sure how to end the movie, but there is an interesting twist of being a zombie. Curtis and Julie are in love. Curtis' dad is in the military and working on a top secret project to use the pesky chemical that brings back the dead. Curtis and Julie see an experiment gone awry and run away. Curtis' dad then is re-assigned to Oklahoma City and must leave immediately. Of course, his son does not want to leave Julie behind. He runs off with Julie, but an accident happens and Julie is killed. Curtis remembers the experiment and brings her back - but she's not the same girl as before. She doesn't want to hurt Curtis, but struggles with her own transformation into a zombie. I was pleasantly surprised how some character and plot developed. There was conflict and dilemma for Curtis, his dad, and Julie. On the other hand, the movie's ending came off a uneven and unfocused. And it falls into the trap of a few horror clichés - like kids sneaking into a military complex. For a change, the Return of the Living Dead franchise got a little resuscitation and came back to life.
Interesting 3rd sequel. With a interesting pair of young actors, Melinda Clarke and J. Trevor Edmond playing the ill-fated pair of lovers:Julie & Curt. Not really great acting but very earnest and refreshing. Kent McCord comes off better as Curt's dad,Colonel Reynolds. But then again he's had a lot of experience especially being on the TV series "Adam-12"Sarah Douglas had a good believable role as a snooty scientist but then again she is good at playing those "witch-type"roles. She seems to be typecast in that type of roles. Two actors that were completely miscast were Mike Moroff and Sal Lopez, these two great character actors have had and done way better. But here, being cast as two good old homeboys from the barrio was not believable one minute for me. Don't get me wrong they did they're best but they were just way too old for these type of characters, especially Mike Moroff.Jamaican actor Basil Wallace, who had an excellent debut in Steven Seagal's "Marked For Death", was also miscast somewhat as the homeless Riverman. But all in all a very interesting take on the zombie franchise and lore. Different also because getting bit by Trioxin zombie in the previous two Return of the Living Dead films did not turn the individuals bit into a zombie. However in Return of the Living Dead III it does. interesting note also was that At one point in preproduction, James Karen and Don Calfa were offered roles in this sequel. Both actors declined. Director Brian Yuzna on the DVD commentary regrets not coming up with a more proper name for the film as "Return of the Living Dead III" is too long. He suggested the title "Kurt and Julie" and admits that the title "Mortal Zombie" (which it was called in some places in Europe) was a nice name. And last but least, sadly, only the R-rated version is available on DVD. Those looking for the unrated director's cut will have to hunt for the VHS version :(
