Simply A Masterpiece

Good movie but grossly overrated
It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.
If there ever were a movie that sucked at royally everything, it'd have to be this movie. The cast dying at the hands of the villain would make you feel relieved.. There is stupidity and then there is extreme masochism. Without saying anything else id just advise to skip this disaster.
OK, here's the deal. The only way you're going to think this is a good movie is if you're a fanboy of the so-called horror genre, because only fanboys will overlook all the obvious shortcomings of this low-budget, simplistic, psycho-with-no-name killer, cat and mouse game in the dank, initially foreboding, but ultimately monotonous tunnels of Berlin, where the usual pretty boys and pretty girls make an underground mountain of illogical, counter-intuitive, anti-survival decisions that lead to conclusions you no longer care much about, which in my case, stopped about ten minutes after they encountered their coveralled boogeyman with his inexplicable glaring and exaggerated gesturing. The violence is jumbled through cheat-cut closeups more commonly associated with high school production values, albeit a bit slicker. To call this a "classic," or "best of anything," is to make a sad admission about how uninteresting and unvaried that the modern whore-or genre really is. This is just another also-rans unimpressive, un-psychological chapter in the apocrypha of male-virgin eye candy that frighten only the most unsophisticated of shut-in teens.
In a way I can almost understand it (the current 5.0 rating), its a movie that is in your face, non apologetic, and genuinely creepy.. Probably only half the people who watch it can handle it.. And just a little note here people: towards the second half of the movie, the main language spoken is German... So put on the English subtitles ;) The main premise of the film is 3 women and a man (one of the women is his girlfriend) and a tour guide going into the underground tunnels of Nazi Germany era.. Hence the title Urban Explorers... That ALONE is scary! One thing I want to say this film did AMAZINGLY is get me very interested in the German history of the Nazi and Berlin Wall eras.. I found myself enthralled by the stories the characters shared in this film..Now I wont lie.. This movie is a take it or leave it experience, it is a graphic (visually and psychologically), brutal, creepy, hellish, half German film.. And in all honesty I almost did not like it, but I found myself hours after the viewing completely fixated on the movie.. Why did that happen, why did they do that... HOW COULD they do that... Only a film of excellent caliber can stick with you for a long while after finishing it... Overall I recommend.. Watch with subtitles, in a dark room (It sort of makes it scarier) FINALLY; Here are my first impressions on the characters all of whom were played to perfection by amazingly gifted young actors and actresses: Tour Guide: Seems like a pretty smart dude who knows his way around Daniel: Seems like a calm guy... Daniel's Girlfriend: Nurse, very attractive French Woman: VERY attractive, a little bit of a ditz Oriental Woman: Not attractive. (LOL)
First of all, having a majority of this movie be in German and NOT subtitling it is very stupid. It's like wanting to make it very artistic but failing miserably. Second, this was waaaay too long. The set up for it and the two opening sequences introducing the four "explorers" was pointless and kind of made me hate them. Third, the whole Nazi subplot seemed irrelevant except for the fact that Nazis are cool and Nazi images in a film, even more cool. (see Frontiers, Dead Snow, Blood Creek) Maybe this did all play into the movie, but seeing as how the antagonist spoke German and their was no subtitles, I only have to guess. Fourth, isn't torture porn a little blasé? I mean hasn't the torture by a psychopath thing been done to death? I've seen countless movies do it better and honestly, if you're going to do the whole torture porn thing, at least show a little more gore and make it worth it. Having only really two, possibly three scenes of semi-gore seems a waste and when you have nothing else going in a film but gore, you should at least play it up. Having said all that, I watched half of this movie and then forwarded to key scenes til the end. I got bored quickly and knowing that nothing was really going to be resolved by the end, decided to just skip to that. SPOILER One cool idea was the salt on the skinned guy. The only piece of creativity in the whole movie. Decent, but didn't make suffering through the long beginning worth it.
