That was an excellent one.
When a movie has you begging for it to end not even half way through it's pure crap. We've all seen this movie and this characters millions of times, nothing new in it. Don't waste your time.
I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
Simply the best movie I have seen! Richard, Robert, Sandra and Shirley ALL give the best performances of anything I have seen... LONG live Sir Richard Harris we all miss and love you! People think Star Wars VVI is The best movie.. Lucus did OK on version 1 the others are not so good... Richard Harris in my opinion give me the most joy as an actor can give ... Man called Horse.... Camelot .. English Bob . Robert Duval . Shirley Not to mention Sandra what a joy to see them give selfless performances to the question all us baby boomer's will face no respect loneliness and lack of a fond family.. Go ahead Francis.. Take down Ernest Hemingway who by the way ended his life early out of what I might say was a kind of sorrow .
This movie's best quality is in its implications. It is rather slow paced, but it allows the viewer to enjoy the movie almost as if one were reading a book. However, in reading the reviews, I have found nothing that might indicate that anyone saw something that I saw, making me question what I saw. Much has been written about Hemingway's sexual proclivity - the question of homosexuality. I see the questioned Hemingway in Frank's character, a macho persona who overcompensates. His scenes with women are all aggressive, not loving, and has many failed marriages. In Walter's character (Duvall) I see a repressed man. Unable to live true to his nature, he romanticizes his relationship with women. Does he really have a chance with Bullock's character? Has he ever "closed the deal" with a woman? There are a few sensual, tender or close moments in the film, namely the haircut and shave, the synchronized swimming and the fireworks scenes, and the type of bicycle they ride binds them metaphorically. Even the title's reference to wrestling could be metaphorical to an event that took place in Puerto Rico (perhaps not with Hemingway, perhaps not wrestling, and perhaps not with a woman). The message, if it is indeed there, may simply be another unspoken element in the film. Which, of course, is the beauty of this film, which I consider to be one of my top 100 of all time.
Although I've only seen this movie once quite a while ago it is definitely on my "see again soon" list. While slipping through the many film credits of Robert Duvall I felt I just had to comment. His performance in this movie separates him from his other characters and in my eyes cements his reputation as a premiere actor. Along with a wonderful cast including Richard Harris as a crusty old curmudgeon, the always talented Shirley MacLaine, and the relative newcomer at that time, Sandra Bullock the film spins its story in a very timely and entertaining manner and left me at the end with not only a lumpy throat (i can't tell you who dies of course but it's one of the best death scenes I've ever seen) but the crushing desire to see it at least three or four more times. Highly recommended.
What a great film! Being a huge Sandra Bullock fan since 95, I knew I had to buy this. I was not let down at all. It is one of my all time favorites! Its a shame that many people don't know about it. Its filled with touching and hilarious moments with outstanding acting and a sweet story! Go get Wrestling Ernest Hemingway today!
