Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.

This film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.

The movie had ended. For a few minutes Henry stared at the blank screen before he became aware of a buzzing noise. The garage-turned-movie- theater would have been dead silent but for that sound. He looked at the overhead beamer, but it did not make the sound. He turned his head from one side to the other to locate the source until he saw Kristl at the other end of their couch. She was hanging a bit to the side with her eyes closed. Her relaxed expression and slightly open mouth made her look peaceful. 'Look at her.. She has fallen asleep.' Henry thought. Kristl was dressed in a dark grey sweater, blue faded jeans and combat boots. Henry tried to imagine her being dressed up like this Julie character from the movie; in ripped clothes with some metal plates, adorned with stakes as armor waving a wicked shaped sword. He imagined her having a wasp like waist and large dangling boobs, with big nipples and wide hips. He failed to get that picture right. Gettingthe picture right was also something he failed to do with this movie too. It started with this supposed-to-be sexy woman living in insignificant colony on an off-beat planet who somehow got to be an expert in guns, lasers, hand weapons, spaceships and whatnot. He liked sexy women like Selene from Underworld, but her fighting skills seem to fit with her: she was a vampire death dealer after all.. How the heck Julie got them went unexplained. But it would not have mattered if it had been tongue-in-cheek like or over the top or somehow funny. But the movie tried to be deadly serious, where cheekiness could have saved it.And then this bad guy. An unknown miner finds a key that gives access to the waters of eternal youth or something and turns him into an evil dude with fighting skills that would put Rambo to shame. It even gives him the dual guns he needs to take over the miner ship. And it even gives him the knowledge to find traces of water of eternal live in space and the route to the planet holding the waters. And it also gives him an army of ruthless obedient fighters. It even.. the list goes on and on. If the animation had been stylish. If the music had been tolerable and well placed.. If the characters had somehow be believable or endearing. If the plot had been better. If the adult content had not been so rubbed into your face. If.. If.. If. It was perhaps lucky that Kristl had fallen asleep. Her sleep was perhaps the best comment to this movie she could give. Yet there was something strange. The snoring sound.. He never knew Kristl to snore, nor had he ever heard Kristl snore. He turned to look at Kristl. The sound did not come from her side of the couch. He looked in to the screen of the computer that controlled the overhead beamer. He saw himself being reflected. He was sleeping. The snoring came from him.

Having seen the original Heavy Metal about 12 times, I was excited to hear that they were doing a sequel and that it would be a full length feature. The magazine format of the original had been one of its more troublesome aspects, thanks in large part to the clumsy framing device of the evil Loch Nar. Still, the gory fight action, hard rock soundtrack and nude scenes made for a pretty original viewing experience, especially for a cartoon. And Heavy Metal's subsequent influence on anime and other sci-fi long ago assured it of significant cult status. The sequel film, however, proved to be something of a disappointment. The character design and background visuals are quite good and the action is smoothly animated, but the story line is derivative and lacks imagination. Given all of the not-yet-filmed stories in the history of genre literature, yet another revenge for murder plot line seems totally unnecessary, and the addition of a fantasy story hook about a nasty villain searching the galaxy for a source of unlimited power is just a meretricious add-on. I found myself enjoying the look of the movie, while being bored out of my mind by its paint-by-numbers story and weak dialog. Approach with caution and keep expectations low.

This follow up to the cult animated movie Heavy Metal is a pale shadow of the original. It's not entirely without entertainment value but it does seem a fairly half-hearted sequel. The first film was hardly perfect; it was very rough around the edges and quite dumb, although that was part of the charm. However, it did possess some originality and character, traits in short supply in Heavy Metal 2000. It also successfully combined its elements of sci-fi, fantasy and erotica together, so that it worked pretty well as a sexy cartoon adventure. Where it also differed significantly was in having an anthology structure as opposed to a single story format. This worked to the original's benefit, as no single plot strand over-stayed its welcome, and a wild selection of tales was loosely joined together. Heavy Metal 2000 has one story, and not one that is especially great for a whole movie to hang on. The animation is slicker than the original but with less character and certainly not great in any case. It seems to be more-or-less a vehicle for Julie Strain, seeing as the central character is basically her. And the film lacks a variety of other female characters to keep things more interesting. The world depicted in this comic really depends on its buxom heroines and relying on one female character is a mistake. Julie's sister is only a minor player in the film, and should have had more screen time. And this leads to another weakness – there just isn't enough erotic content either. This is key ingredient of the world of Heavy Metal, and it does seem careless for the film-makers to have put too little emphasis on it.Having said all of this, this feature isn't a total wash-out. It does provide some entertainment and it is still in the same general ball-park as the first movie. So it's diverting enough and quite good fun. It just should have been better that's all.

Heavy Metal magazine was one of the best things growing up. I have both of the movies and still love the original, but this movie does not compare at all. The story is a little laughable. Heavy Metal has literally hundreds of stories to pick from so why they selected this one I just don't know. The animation is good, and so are the acting talents even without John Candy. They could have done so much better though. One scene is stolen directly from the first movie, almost literally. The heroin babe of the story has to dress in her sexy battle outfit, and they could have just copied and pasted the scene from the first movie considering it's almost exactly the same. Talk about lazy.If you see this on TV (Teletoon or something) it's worth a watch, but personally I wouldn't pay any more than $5 bargain bin prices for it.
