It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.

April Epner, a nearly 40-year old Jewish woman, is going through a crisis in her life. Her husband Ben leaves her and her adoptive mother dies. Then a talk show host called Bernice Graves is introduced to her as her biological mother. And she meets a new man named Frank at the school she teaches his two children. Then She Found Me (2007) is the directorial debut by actress Helen Hunt. She gives a great performance in the lead as April Epner.Bette Midler is terrific as Bernice Graves.Colin Firth is marvelous as Frank.Matthew Broderick, who turned 50 a couple of months ago, does very nice work as Ben Green.Ben Shenkman is great as Dr. Freddy Epner.Salman Rushdie, who is better known as a writer, does very good work as Dr. Samani.Lynn Cohen plays April's adoptive mother Trudy, and she's very good.As themselves in this movie are seen Janeane Garofalo, Tim Robbins and Edie Falco. This is a nice, yet flawed movie. The drama of it works pretty good, it's quite moving. But it doesn't go out to make some movie history. It doesn't succeed in rising above mediocrity. But it's a pretty nice little movie that proves Helen Hunt can also direct.

Browsing through netflix's instant play collection and getting increasingly frustrated by the minute, I suddenly saw this movie cover with well-known faces and a promising storyline. So confident was I that I did not even bother with the reviews. Well it isn't a bad movie but one should not really rely entirely on just the cover and the storyline..I kind of understand what Helen Hunt intended to do - make a realistic movie with a comic touch. However the only real part of the movie was Helen Hunt's sans makeup, tired and anemic face staring at us..I am all for breaking the sex symbol norm in Hollywood...But her look would have been more appropriate had the character in the movie just survived the holocaust or was recovering from cancer.Moving on...the movie has too many central themes - helen hunt's character wants a baby but wait - her husband leaves her so she gets into a rebound relationship with a handsome but childish Brit...no it's about her getting pregnant .. Hold on.. it's that she suddenly gets to know her birth mother...Ummm confused? So is poor Helen - constantly ,all throughout the movie. For someone who wanted to break the makeup norm in Hollywood..how about breaking the cliché of middle aged American women always looking confused and attractive men finding it endearing?..The parts of her with Bette Midler start off neither funny , nor striking but get much better and start to make sense.Their chemistry isn't quite there but there are some good moments..mostly credited to Midler... as a matter of fact the second half seems more genuine than the first half ... Colin,Broderick even Midler and Hunt all stay in their comfort zones..no one is stretched beyond..It was like everyone wanted to add that extra but was asked not to..It isn't exactly an excellent director debut for Hunt but she will probably get there someday..

In Helen Hunt's feature film directorial debut, Hunt plays April Epner, a 39-year old school teacher who wishes to have a baby of her own but is aware of her biological clock running out of time. Life has many unexpected twists in store for her: her immature husband (Matthew Broderick) leaves her, her adopted mother (Lynn Cohen) dies and her fussy biological mother (Bette Midler) contacts her for the first time. While coping with all the changes, she also meets a handsome divorcé Frank (Colin Firth), with whom a new relationship might be possible, but there are still more surprises waiting for her.I was worried the movie could turn out to be just another clichéd rom-com, but luckily Hunt and the other writers didn't go for the easiest laughs when adapting Elinor Lipman's novel for the screen. The best humour is of the quiet, subtle type and found in awkward silences and conversations between two very different characters. Bette Midler's flamboyant antics work fine when contrasted to Hunt's more reserved, insecure protagonist, and while Colin Firth's British charm is closer to ordinary screen romance, he knows how to handle a role like this. Besides a comedy, the personal development of April from a mousy follower to an independent woman who finally dares to decide for herself is a decent dramatic story as well.I've always been fond of spaciously framed static shots in films, so I was happy to see Hunt using them satisfactorily in her mise-en-scène, even though the film is hardly showing off with the direction. The music fits in the dramedic atmosphere very neatly too. On a more general level, the main theme of the film is the meaning of family in one's life, be it parents (biological or adopted), spouses, significant others or children. The unpredictable nature of life in general is also examined; the ending is in tune with the idea of accepting changing plans. Perhaps a little more boldness in the story would have made the film even better, but ultimately I think Then She Found Me is a well made effort and a good start for Hunt's directorial career which will hopefully continue in the future.

It's great to see Helen Hunt back on the big screen. This time she assumes multiple roles, as director, co-writer and lead actress. Hunt proves to be quite a competent director as she tells a charming story set in a small town about a young woman (who was adopted by a Jewish lady) who desperately wants to have a baby but things go haywire when her husband leaves her, her adopt mother passes away and her eccentric birth mother unexpectedly shows up. 'Then She Found Me' is an unconventional comedy and Hunt has put a lot of heart into the making. With a solid screenplay, the film successfully keeps the viewer involved. She reunites with Matthew Broderick on screen after almost twenty years and her pairing with Colin Firth works very well. Even though Broderick and Firth have played similar roles earlier, it fun watching them matching wits with Hunt. Then there's a joyful Bette Midler who totally rocks as the eccentric talk-show host/mother. Yet, this is Helen Hunt's film. She's been playing supporting roles of late but with 'Then She Found Me' she proves that she can still lead a film. I admire that she has made her own thing and succeeded in giving us a gem of a movie. Hats off to the multi-talented Ms. Hunt.
