just watch it!
A very feeble attempt at affirmatie action
The storyline feels a little thin and moth-eaten in parts but this sequel is plenty of fun.
It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
I hated this when I saw it as a kid. But in my maturity [I've been through Firbank, I've been through Ludlam and Busch, and I'm here] I get it and like it. Why NOT give the Liberace of horror the high camp vehicle he really deserves, squish the horrific elements off to one side and give us a pageant of decadent poses, literate witticisms and rude winks? I'm glad they made this film and I find myself wishing that Ken Russell had either had access to production values this good or had given enough of a damn to have worked for them. As for the abbreviated kill count, I found it refreshing. I was glad that it lacked the sickening gore and sadism of "The Abominable Dr. Phibes" and "Theatre of Blood," and as good as those films are, I don't particularly want to see them again because I don't want to see THAT again. I really am getting old. It's been said that the entertainer Frank Sidebottom must have gotten the idea for his John Held Jr. style costume head from Dr. Phibes' Clockwork Wizards, and watching this I'm not so sure--Sidebottom's head was way creepier, maybe because unlike the Wizards he actually was supposed to be human.
This was a good sequel to a great movie. It maintains the same tone as the first one, along with many of the same cast and crew. There's even a small cameo by Peter Cushing. It's pretty much a re-tread of the first movie, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. This one is best enjoyed as a double feature with the first.
I was able to buy that at the end of the first one the police didn't see the jars of blood and formaldehyde and the tubes going under the floor where Phibes and his wife were hidden. It didn't make sense but I somehow didn't care. Well him waking up and knowing it's been three years isn't as easy to accept. Then he discovers his house has been demolished and is now a pile of rocks and a chair. The papyrus(did he mention it in the first movie????) is missing from the safe(which is somehow still there) and he immediately knows who took it. Somehow he still has his car and an endless supply of money. He decides to follow the guy who has the papyrus and even manages to bring his clockwork band that no longer exists because it was upstairs(which no longer exists). So they get to Egypt and lots of things that don't make sense happen and you realize you've been duped into watching another terrible sequel. The cops even follow them to Egypt.Yes local cops going to a different continent makes perfect sense.Don't waste your time with this mess.
THE ABOMINABLE DR PHIBES was a big enough hit to lead to a sequel but you can see right away how little mileage there is in a franchise like that . Despite the action being moved all the way to Egypt it's still the same basic idea as the first film with a genius madman killing people in a series of inventive ways that border on the blackly comical . There's also the camp feel of the first film especially the character interaction and dialouge between Trout and his Superior The sequel has a very strange cast . It includes characters from the first film but we see the return of Terry Thomas in an entirely different role . He's also there in a one scene cameo as are much of the big name cast such as Reid and Cushing which seems like a cynical marketing exercise to bump up the star names when in fact most of the characters are superfluous to the threadbare story
