Simply Perfect
The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
The first must-see film of the year.
Actress is magnificent and exudes a hypnotic screen presence in this affecting drama.
I sought this out because of World of Tomorrow, which despite being shorter, does have more of a narrative drive and probably even more ideas than this. This, however, is still rather brilliant. It's easy to think that after a while it will get old and dull, but the ideas keep on flowing and they keep coming on. There's a narrative here, but it's the random, spontaneous moments that make the film shine. Despite such simple animation, it also works very well within what the film is trying to do. I don't think this is for everyone, but I definitely think that it will be able to find a sizable audience that will greatly appreciate it
I created an account just so that I could write this review. The movie starts out slow, but it gets so good after the first half. This movie gets better each time and the animation is amazing. It's hard to believe no computers were used! This is a true work of art. It isn't often that I would consider something art, but this is special. I typically prefer action movies and other movies that don't require a lot of mental energy, but this movie has totally changed my perspective. A movie of this quality comes along once in a generation. I hope I'm lucky enough to see this kind of genius again. BEST MOVIE EVER!!!
A surprising amount of humanity for a stick-figure animation. The animation, as well as the score, adds a lot to the overall existential drama and suspense of the movie as a whole. Very emotional and will keep you guessing on how much deeper it will go into the human psyche and mind. Because the animation is so minimal - yet so powerful - it focuses a lot more on the human stream of consciousness as well as developing a compelling and heartfelt story. The narration also adds a personal connection to the character of the story. Do no underestimate this film for its simplicity, as it will delve inside the tiniest human memory and then expand through all of space and time.
In a film industry there animated movies are getting more and more advanced, this extreme surprise shows up on Netflix. What a beautiful film this is.Don Hertzfeldt, a director I had never heard of until this day tells the story of a man named Bill, who struggles to put together his shattered psyche. All this is done with very simple, but heartwarming drawings mixed with some live action moments.Like Mary and Max (2009), this animated feature relies heavily on the narrator, who's voice is the only one you hear. We listen to simple stories about life itself, with some very dark humor intended. You'll laugh, you'll cry, but most of all you'll only spend 62 minutes of your life on something that was quite clearly worth it...
