At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.
The acting in this movie is really good.
One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
I thought it was a pretty good flick considering that i can't stand reading movies as if they were comic books... and this film in particular certainly qualifies as one to say the very least. i.e.; -(G.I. Joe from Korea meets Fangoria) The only aspect of this film that had me scratching the dandruff outta my head was wondering who it was that played the role of Sergeant 1st class Beck... the Black-American g.i. soldier in the film whos'e role went uncredited. Does anybody out there in IMDb- land know the actors name who played the role of Sergeant Beck? Perhaps I may have dozed a bit between snoozing and the Twilight Zone, but I'd also like to know how Joey Anselmo fit into the film as I don't recollect seeing him anywhere throughout the entirety of this creature-feature Asian thriller.
Those who liked "Deathwatch" may wish to check out this(even better)Korean ghost tale from director Su-chang Kong about a group of South Korean troops in Vietnam searching for a missing group they heard a distress signal from. Once they get up to a location called R-Point where these old Temple Ruins are located(signifying in a different language that anyone with blood on their hands would be cursed;it's stated that this location goes untouched by either the North or South Vietnamese)weird things start to occur. They meet people, actually talking to them in conversations, only later finding their dead corpses. They set-up a base-camp at an eerie dilapidated castle and try their damnedest to find the soldiers..but even finding their own way out of R-Point seems impossible. Soon various soldiers loose their grip on sanity..we soon learn that ghosts and guns can only lead to a heap of trouble. There's possibly even some possession involved as well.I thought it was good and creepy. The setting amongst the grass-infested ruins and castle just adds to the eerie atmosphere of the ghosts often appearing from the dark.
Unlike most alleged "fright films," R-POINT boasts some very impressive-and very spooky- moments. For me, the spookiest has to be the scene where a pair of soldiers cut off from their platoon see what they believe to be their companions creeping stealthily through a field of high grass and fall into step alongside them... only to come to realize that they are, in fact, all alone in said field... Now that's spooky! I found only two flaws worth mentioning: one, the alleged "acting" of the "American" soldiers. One can overlook the sometimes "broader" performances of the Asian actors in Asian films- but to come across such a just plain bad performance by an English-speaking character in an otherwise acceptable ensemble is jarring. The only other bur under my saddle would be the scene where a soldier sitting on a step is suddenly drenched with blood from above. In the movie itself, no explanation is even attempted. In the extras, however, we learn that this was blood spilling from a helmet dangling above the unsuspecting soldier. Why this wasn't made clear in the movie itself is never made clear (if you see what I'm saying)... Overall, R-POINT is an often genuinely spooky movie. Just don't forget to check out the extras.
A number of the negative reviews nailed it on this movie. It was nothing really special and -- while I don't particularly enjoy horror films (particularly with a lot of gratuitous gore, Al or otherwise) -- I had to watch this one in installments because it got somewhat repetitive and predictable. Not speaking Korean, I relied on subtitles but was surprised at how pedestrian the dialog was. The members of the lost squad of Korean soldiers spent the better part of the movie calling each other "assholes" and dropping the F-bomb on each other. Now, I know these are soldiers and all that, but the writers (translators) could have made it just a little more interesting....recommended only if desperate and there's really *nothing* decent to watch.
