As Good As It Gets
There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
Children of the Corn V (1998) * 1/2 (out of 4) Fifth film in the series is once again a different direction but that doesn't mean it's going to work. Six college friends are going to the cornfields so that they can spread the ashes of their dead friend. When two are slaughtered the other four stay put so that they can find one of the members missing brother. This leads to a strange home ran by a man named Luke (David Carradine) who is using the children to start a new cult. After enjoying the previous entry this one here comes as a letdown for several reasons but the biggest being that this one here offers up a rather interesting cast. A hardly recognizable Eva Mendes plays one of the college students, Kane Hodder of Jason fame plays a bartender and we've got Fred Williamson playing the sheriff. Sadly Williamson and even Carradine are wasted in thankless roles that don't require either actor very much to do. The story here isn't anything too original and writer/director Wiley doesn't try to do much with it. There doesn't seem to have been too much thought going into the screenplay as we get the typical set up and everything that follows pretty much plays by the rules and doesn't offer any surprises or twists. The entire "village" being ran by Carradine is rather bland and, as usual, doesn't make too much sense. The performances are all a mixed bag but it's fun seeing veterans like Carradine and Williamson even if they aren't given much to work with. Ahmet Zappa appears in a role and Mendes, in her film debut, doesn't offer too much either. The film contains your typical murder sequences but none of them really stand out as being any good. In the end, this film offers nothing new or entertaining and its 83-minute running time goes way too slowly.
Before I start getting complaints, or at least dumbfounded looks, from people who strongly disagree with my rating, I should explain a number of ways in which I'm biased here:* I'm an easy date when it comes to horror films in general--as long as they're technically competent, they're almost guaranteed a 5 out of 10 from me. * I have a soft spot for long-running series. The more horror films the better if you ask me, and never-ending series seem to agree with me. * I'm a HUGE Frank Zappa fan, so the excitement of seeing both Ahmet and Diva Zappa in the same film--and with a bit of Frank-like blow-up doll action, no less--brings my score up a notch. (My only question is why didn't they have Diva's character kill Ahmet's character?) * As soon as Eva Mendes appears on screen, I fall in love and become hypnotized. By the way, great decision on the wardrobe, Mr. Wiley. * I'm a big fan of "B-movie" warhorses like David Carradine and Fred Williamson. And aside from those biases, this isn't at all a bad film, even if it can be a bit predictable. It's consistent with the Children of the Corn mythos--in so far as the mythos makes sense in general--and also extends it nicely. I can't say whether the film is scary, as I don't really find that quality in any film, but it certainly was entertaining, and the Teflon coating on the main protagonist, Allison (Stacy Galina) was an unusual touch.
This movie had alot more gore than Children of the corn's: 666, and Relavation, and it's alot more entertaining. It is not as scary as the fourth one was. The leader in this film was different and what annoyed the hell out of him was people coming into corn!I like it in the end when the women is holding a baby , and when it opened it's eyes , here we go again, the corn field is calling!7/10.
Adam While As the Child was not bad !Adam While is a good actor:-) He's the only good thing came up on my head. The story sucked !I just want to say if you have heartattack ,do not watch this movie ! It's terrible scary !!!! I don't think the story was good, but very scary. I 've seen the first one & the 2nd. They were much better ! If you are fan of Adam While, you could take a look :-) Otherwise keep out :-(
