A lot more amusing than I thought it would be.
Tells a fascinating and unsettling true story, and does so well, without pretending to have all the answers.
Blistering performances.
This film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.
HIT AND RUN is a bog-standard example of the low budget horror genre. It's a film made with little in the way of intelligence or originality, instead telling a weary old story with no variation. The dumb protagonist decides to drink drive and accidentally run over somebody; instead of going to the police she buries the body in the woods before somebody starts stalking her. This cheap tale goes for a mix of atmosphere and gore, but fails on both counts. The direction is very ordinary, the scare scenes are anything but, and the gore effects hardly stand out. You'd be better off watching the ghoulishly enjoyable hitchhiker segment from CREEPSHOW 2 instead of this trash.
Man I was watching this and I was thinking is that Kevin Corrigan from grounded for life?? Holy cow. He has the most gnarly teeth ever. That dental work was out of control dude. All yellow and jaggedly. That hit/run car crash really left him disfigured bad. He looks like one of the zombie guys who escaped from night of the living deads. Weird performance too. He keeps whispering incoherently and then raising his voice, with a savage kind of ferocity, totally into his role. I'd say, possessed like. I never seen Corrigan playing this kind of "villain" so that was bizarre. A 'departure' for him, no pun intended. Although his role is not that huge and you can barely tell it's him, this could be worth a look see esp if you're a Corrigan fan and want to see him in something different.
First part of this movie Hit and Run is basically a thriller with some horror elements. Mary Murdock, a young college girl comes back from a late night of partying with buddies. On her way home, she is singing along to music and does not notice a tire in the road. She swerves to miss it. When she hears noises in her garage that night, she's horrified to find a man stuck on the bumper. He is barely alive, bleeding and mangled. She tries to help him but he wants to grab her leg, so she beats him with a golf club. She buries the body in some nearby woods. In the morning she tries to cover up all the evidence of the crime, but she gets more paranoid and feels she is being watched. She starts going off the deep end and doing more and more insane things. She tells her boyfriend about what happened and he participates in the cover up. He tells her to keep mum until the media fest dies down. Without giving away too much, it comes about that the dead guy (who is called Emser and is a bi polar school teacher) comes back to stalk Mary. Rick her boyfriend ends up dead.At this point, the movie shifts gears into something like surreal horror. Many events start to feel disconnected as if we are in Mary's anxiety dream. Emser stabs her and then in continuing the act of revenge ties her to front of the car and drives her around empty highways scaring the living hell out of her. He then takes her back to his house and leaves her in the garage, like she did to him. More murders take place by Emser and when he takes Mary to bury her in the same grave, things take another turn when she gets away and another hit and run is going to happen, this one a purposeful one.In this second half, the thriller suspense gives way toward more grotesque fantastical horror elements. The movie somehow manages to blend these different styles into a somewhat coherent curious package.
My review. "roller-coaster" is the song playing at the opening before the girl Mary gets in her car and slides off the road. And at the end I realized this was probably appropriate choice. The whole thing is a roller-coaster through Mary's descent to insanity I think. After she hits a sicko dude on the road (Hello!? Drunk driving anyone??), crazy chick doesn't know it but she brought the guy back stuck on her bumper. She finds him in the garage bleeding to death. She try to help him but he doesn't want help. He wants to kill her because he's all bloody and screwed up. So Mary knock him down with golf clubs and then she bury him (digging with a Frisbee!! very funny) and when he survives of course he's angry and wants payback. So she's got to kill the dude again or be killed. She tries to cover up the whole accident with help of her moron boyfriend who had me cackling. But dead teacher ain't happy and comes back to play cat and mouse with drunk driver girl. He ties her on the bumper (with Christmas lights no less), so she gets to feel what it's like on a roller-coaster drive. I don't want to spoil it but only one can live and the other will probably be in big trouble. (hit and run) 6/10
