Absolutely Brilliant!
To all those who have watched it: I hope you enjoyed it as much as I do.
The best films of this genre always show a path and provide a takeaway for being a better person.
Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.
I would have never guessed this movie was made for TV if I didn't know that information because the film is that well made! Outstanding well written biography and performances by the cast.Dark Prince tends to have a little bit of everything: Drama, War, Crime, Romance, Fantasy, Action, Adventure and, yes, Horror... not a bad combination for a biographical film.Dark Prince: The True Story of Dracula should become a favorite (staple) for those who want a smarter, educated, Hallows' Eve movie festival since it is in fact a biography of Vlad Tepes, the real life Dracula.10/10
Though there are some historical inaccuracies I found Rudolf Martin's portrayal of Dracula to be incredibly good. It is no wonder he reprised the role for TV's Buffy verses Dracula (Season 5, episode 1 of Buffy The Vampire Slayer). This is a very good movie that looks at the good and bad of the historical Dracula and at the end of the film even ties in some of the vampire story so that the film works as a loose prequel to Bram Stoker's Dracula starring Gray Oldman. I strongly recommend this film for any fan of Dracula or of the history of the middle ages. The film is very well done, very moody, very atmospheric and surprisingly educational.
The story of Dracula is one of the best horror stories of all time but the story of the historical figure, Vlad the Impaler, on which Dracula is partly based, is at least just as good and interesting. This movie presents itself as the true story of Vlad the Impaler, or Dracula as they say but the movie has neither the quality, story or resources to really be considered to be the definitive story about Vlad the Impaler, or Dracula's origins. But most important thing; it isn't really being historically accurate in the first place. It doesn't do the true story of Vlad much justice and while watching this movie you're being left puzzled as to why he is still considered to be a national hero by the Romanian people. You can blame it on the budget really. Because the movie didn't had lots of money to spend, it sticked more to some of its melodrama and talking moments, while ignoring all of the important battles fought and the monstrosities committed by Vlad the Impaler. The movie seems to be afraid of it that we might start hating on the main characters. It's the reason why it makes Vlad look like a reasonable family man, while he in fact was a cruel, sadistic man, responsible for the death of tens of thousands, also mostly innocents. It might also be because of the miscast Rudolf Martin, who looks far too gentle and sophisticated for the main role of the villain-hero Vlad. He never comes across as a strong, powerful leader, that strikes fear into people's hearts. It's also quite puzzling as to why if this movie wanted to tell the true story of Vlad the Impaler, why does he end up becoming Dracula by the end, while of course in fact the historical person Vlad had nothing to do with the character Dracula. Perhaps they were planning or secretly hoping on doing on sequel, telling the Dracula tale with some of the same actors out of this movie. But there is really more wrong with the story, or rather said the way the story gets told. It's a quite short movie and this can be seen back in its way of storytelling. The movie too often makes sudden jumps, especially toward the end. It's quite ridicules at times, for instance when Vlad bans his wife from his castle. 2 minutes later he is asking her for forgiveness and 5 minutes later again they are living together again happily, like nothing ever happened. Or when Vald gets captured and set free again, in the time-span of maybe just 2 minutes. This approach completely ruins some of the movie its potential good dramatic or powerful moments. However when taking into consideration that this is a low-budget TV production, I have to say that it's really not a bad one. Sure it tells a kind of weak story but the movie at least never becomes a bad or uninteresting one to watch. I have seen far worse, that's for sure!6/10http://bobafett1138.blogspot.com/
Interesting, subtle and nice. New exploration of a old subject with the desire to present the truth about a Romanian hero.Good exercise of image and form of rehabilitation.A childish story, with delicate emotion and many clichés.Tale for West sensibility about a Prince Charming in the skin of vampire. And parts of real facts for a decent taste."Dark Prince" is interesting for good intentions of script, for the temptation to create another image of Dracula, for presence of Romanian good actors (Maia Morgenstern like example), for the historical atmosphere. The only problem is the respect for real facts. For a stranger the film may be a revelation. For a Romanian is a caricature. Names of fiction and of reality are mixed for create a flavor. The relation with Orthodox Church is simplificated with some shadows like in "Da Vinci Code". Vlad Tepes is a puppet of time and religion. And the end is last element of romantic puzzle. So, I don't know if it is a good film. The intention is generous but the result is mediocre. For many reasons it is a film " ad usum Delphini", good for a image about a character, fake for the image of a Romanian ruler.
