It's fun, it's light, [but] it has a hard time when its tries to get heavy.
Simple and well acted, it has tension enough to knot the stomach.
When a movie has you begging for it to end not even half way through it's pure crap. We've all seen this movie and this characters millions of times, nothing new in it. Don't waste your time.
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
It takes a special kind of person to appreciate Troma movies. They definitely aren't for everyone. This is considered to be their best movie but I would say it's only in the top ten. This movie(like many other Troma flicks) takes place in the imaginary town of Tromaville, New Jersey.A town that has become a dumping ground for toxic waste. For some reason all the cool kids hang out at the local gym where poor, geeky Melvin works as the mop boy.Of course the cool kids hate Melvin and decide to play a trick on him.A hot girl tells him if he puts on a pink tutu she will have sex with him.She makes him close his eyes to kiss her and he opens them to find out he is kissing a sheep in front of all the cool kids.He runs down the hall and falls out a window into an open barrel of toxic waste that is on a flatbed truck that has pulled over so the driver can snort coke. The waste transforms him into a monster that loves to violently kill anyone who hurts people. For a low budget film the plot and special effects are pretty good. The jokes can get a bit cheesy but that's what Troma is all about.Six stars.
"The Toxic Avenger" is an odd case where I cannot give the film a vote. After all, in so many ways it's a terrible movie...with horrible acting, an insane story and more ways to offend people than many of John Waters' films! But, at the same time, the film never tries to be anything else. It's a bad movie and clearly WANTS to be a bad movie...which make it pretty unique. In the hellishly awful town of Tromaville, punks, bullies and sociopaths seem to be everywhere. You'll see these folks, for kicks, say a LOT of politically incorrect things, attempt to rape a blind girl AFTER they shotgun her seeing eye dog and run amok deliberately running over children...and then backing up over their heads to make sure they're dead...and it's pretty grisly. Therefore it's NOT a film for kids or anyone with taste..or anyone who doesn't want to see guys kicked in the crotch again and again and again. However, when poor Melvin is bullied, he ends up falling into some conveniently located open radioactive waste barrels...and he becomes the Toxic Avenger. Again and again, he confronts these scum-bags and kills or maims them...and becomes a very strange super-hero in the process! The bottom line is that for bad film junkies and folks who want a laugh and don't mind all the super-offensive story elements, then by all means watch it. It's not a film to show your mother or Father O'Malley! The film, by the way, is kind of like the play "Toxic Avenger" but is also quite different. Both are tacky and fun, however.
Troma movies are what got me into acting. Horrible video quality, terrible sound, awful actors and visual effects that are made in a basement....and its an amazing movie.A nerd turned superhero that has no limits. If you want to see a mutated superhero kill hundreds of bad guys and still hook up with the hot blonde in a red dress with red shoes this is your movie.Toxie delivers in every way possible. Ypu feel sorry for him, you cheer him on to kill more and more and you fall in love with the ridiculous and eccentric villains from the heath club, yes the Tromaville health club, Toxies true origin!Considered by many the greatest Tromaa movie of all time, I cannot recommend The Toxic Avenger enough! It really is one of my favorite movies.
Oh man, I freaking' LOVE this movie! When I fist saw it, the movie blew my freaking mind! This is the movie that made me obsess over Troma! So, anyways, let's get on with the review! Melvin Ferd III (played by Mark Torgl) is a socially awkward geeky mop boy who works at the Tromaville Health Club. He is a 90 LB. weakling who isn't liked by any of it's visitors, but there are a certain number of visitors that REALLY hate Melvin, they take it too far by making him dress up in a pink tutu in order to kiss Julie (who pretended to be in love with him), Melvin is tricked and is laughed at bye all of the health club visitors. He runs away, and they chase him, up until he falls out of a window and lands in a barrel of toxic waste, thus making him become... The Toxic Avenger! And so on, Toxie stomps out crime, corruption, and finds a blind girlfriend! The movie is great! Mark Torgl's acting as Melvin is great! I especially love the facial expression he makes when he walks in on Slug and Wanda making love, just priceless! The action scenes are REALLY great (if you dig gore, I know you'll love it!), and the way Toxie kills off the baddies are great! The one line I'll always remember is when Toxie is killing Slug and Bozo. Slug gets thrown out of the car and killed, thus leaving only Bozo, Toxie gets close up to Bozo and takes control of the wheel, Bozo demands the wheel and Toxie says: "You want the wheel?", rips out the wheel, and says "Here! Take the wheel!" Classic! It's great! I give the movie 7.7/10 stars!
