Admirable film.
Absolutely the worst movie.
This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.
BLOOD AND THE BLACK LACE is a mysterious horror film, which is based on a series of brutal murders, drug trafficking and unconvincing police investigation. A profile of killer and ways of liquidation are the biggest advantages of this film. All other elements are somewhat retrograde and its go to an unclear extreme.A wealthy Cristina and her greedy lover Max lead a respectable fashion salon. One of many beautiful models employed at the salon is attacked and violently killed by an assailant wearing a white featureless mask. A police investigation is under way, while all her friends and acquaintances, it seems, shocked. One of the girls finds a victim diary. All of the fashion house's various sins, including corruption, abortions, blackmail and drug addiction are explained in that diary. Suddenly almost every employee becomes nervous...Mr. Bava has used, on an imaginative way, exploitative resources, through the beauty and attractiveness of the actresses in this film. His mix of eroticism and explicit violence was an innovation in the genre. He has disrupted the motives in a way, because the killings point to a drug addict and a sexual predator. The concept of greed and jealousy can be seen only in metaphors.A creepy atmosphere is in a kind of contrast to the visual beauty of the film. However, other elements are quite neglected. In short, imaginative and decorative murders of beautiful and attractive women.
****SPOILERS****Filmed in lush and dazzling colors and mostly, some 90% of it, at night the late Mario Bava's "Blood and Black Lace" set the slandered for all the likewise Italian as well as US & European Giallo slasher movies that was to follow it. Set in an Italian boarding house for fashion models run by Contessa Cristina Como, Eva Bartok, and her American lover Max Marian,Cameron Mitchell,a crazed and masked killer targets the woman staying there starting with Isabella,Francesca Ungaro, whom he strangles to death within the first 10 minutes of the movie. As we soon find out it was Isabella who knew the killer's identity who she was blackmailing for embezzlement money of the boarding house's way of doing business. The film goes on to have the masked killer knock off some half dozen of the woman at the boarding house until with almost a half hour to go in the movie to no one's surprise-It was very obvious right from the start- that his identity is revealed as well as the person-Which wasn't that obvious- who's involved in his string of murders! Trying to throw the police off his scent the killer forces his accomplice to murder another one of the women, by drowning her in a bathtub and slashing her wrist, staying at the boarding house, to provide him with an alibi and then have him or her killed so to have the police case on his crimes closed. It was too bad for him that it didn't quite work out that way and it was that mistake, in his accomplice surviving, that ended up doing him in! ***SPOILERS**** It was police Inspecter Silverster, Thomas Reiner, who smelled a rat in all these killings and the real reason for that is the late Isabella's secret red diary that a number of pages had since gone missing. It was what's in it that implicated a number people who were embezzling the funds of the boarding house and the fashion salon connected to it which lead to the killer's murderous rampage. This at first was just a simple money issue that escalated into serial murder and ended up with the deaths, by them killing each other, of those involved in it.
Blood and Black Lace (1964) **** (out of 4) Mario Bava's ground-breaking murder-mystery takes place around a model agency where one by one women begin to be murdered by a person dressed in black and a haunting white mask. A police inspector appears to have a list of suspects narrowed down but soon he realizes that there are many twists ahead of him.BLOOD AND BLACK LACE might not have been the first giallo ever made but there's no question that it had the biggest impact on the genre and it influenced everything that was to follow. It's easy to watch this film and see how it would influence the likes of all Italian mysteries going forward and especially those of Dario Argento. It's been said that Bava was a genius with the camera and that's obviously true by watching this Technicolor gem that jumps off the screen from the opening shot to the very last.To me the real star here is the actual look of the film. From the opening shot to the very last you're greeted with some of the greatest and more lured images that you're ever going to see. Several directors were able to work wonders with Technicolor but I really can't think of too many who used the colors so well. Just take a look at the great detail in the various red colors throughout the picture. Whether it's a diary, a phone or blood flowing through a tub, the color just jumps out. The solid black look of the killer is something else that really stands out in the picture and just take a look at the sequence where a light flickers on and off to highlight the killer. The film offers up some very good performances from the cast. Even though Cameron Mitchell is the only "name" here, everyone does a very good job in their roles. The death scenes are quite poetic in their own right and there's no doubt that the mystery keeps you guessing right up to the end. Another thing I've always loved about this picture is Bava's style. It really just seems as if the camera is floating from one scene to the next in a poetic way that captures the beauty of everything we're seeing on the screen but also ties everything together.BLOOD AND BLACK LACE is one of those landmark films that has been copied dozens of times over the years but it's lost none of its luster. The film is as impressive today as it was the day it was released.
Oh holy goodness. OK, saw this one at Glasgow Frightfest 2015. I was expecting something at least in the vague area of horror. Let me just cut right to the chase here, it is one of the most boring, uninteresting movies I have seen. And I've seen some boring drivel before. Yes, it is said to be this huge classic, and it inspired a billion movies after it, apparently, and blah blah blah, but you know what? It is still incredibly boring. There is nothing of interest here. It is not funny because of campiness or anything like that, it is not gory, it is not suspenseful. Action choreography (if you can call it that) is poor, it has typical old-movie-overacting. It is just plain and simple boredom. Boredom caught on tape. There is just nothing good about it.I know all the movie snobs are going to see red (ooh, like the symbolism in the movie itself!) when I say it's boring, but let em. You could watch almost anything else instead of this, and it will be better.
