Simply A Masterpiece
Entertaining from beginning to end, it maintains the spirit of the franchise while establishing it's own seal with a fun cast
It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.
This is a dark and sometimes deeply uncomfortable drama
Typical disaster movie where a natural disaster saves a marriage. Cliched and nothing new, yet interesting enough thanks to a credible cast.
"Jack Tate" (Michael Shanks) is a meteorologist who is totally devoted to his work--at the expense of his family. As a result he is pending a divorce from his wife, "Emma Tate" (Alexandra Davies) and their 16 year old daughter "Naomi Tate" (Indiana Evans) blames him as well. Yet even though he plans to spend more time with his family a solar eclipse suddenly triggers a hole in the ozone which produces a deadly arctic blast which he believes endangers the entire planet. Unfortunately, nobody believes his dire predictions and while he races to find a solution to the problem he finds that his credibility is seriously being questioned by his superiors and family alike. Now rather than reveal any more of the plot and risk ruining the film for those who haven't seen it I will just say that this was a rather preposterous but still mildly entertaining movie all the same. I say this because, although I liked the overall concept of the movie, the science behind it was more than a little dubious to say the least. In any case I've definitely seen worse "natural disaster" films and for that reason I rate this movie as only slightly below average.
Before I rant, I just want to say the acting was pretty good so I'm not blaming the actors. This was like a pretty bad version of the Australian TV show "Sea Patrol" and Sea Patrol is pretty bad! I have to hand it to the actors that they didn't just slither away halfway though shooting it as I would have been tempted to do. I did get a few unintentional laughs though: There's this 'cloud' that attacks major cities throughout the world. It reminds me of the cancer blob animation by Terry Gilliam in Monty Python, nice sunny day in Amsterdam, people merrily out shopping - OH OH, WHAT'S THAT COMING OVER THE ROOFTOPS?? It's the KILLER CLOUD!! AHHHH!!!! Another funny part was there's this freezing cold emergency going on and a big airliner is approaching the runway and nobody's told the pilot? Why would the pilot not know something like this?! I just love stuff like this - it's the kind of thing that 6 year old kids think up playing when playing in the sand box. The pilot's blabbing away to the passengers "Thank-you for flying Disaster Airlines, please return your seats to the upright pos... OMG! WHAT IS THAT GIANT CLOUD?? AHHHHH!! WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!! BOOM!!!! So, it's pretty bad, special effects and animation were terrible, looks like it was all done by 1st year college students taking an animation course. The good? There's a few cute Aussie chicks, especially Saskia Hampele, quite a hotty.
Since long I haven't seen such a worthless movie! I wondered where they found so many bad actors/actresses. The play was so obviously imitating the better movies and acting, it was shameful, and hopelessly boring, tedious, time wasting! I stopped this film halfway, couldn't stand it any longer. Why does it appear to be so often the case with disaster movies? I've seen a few, but it seems to be difficult to make a good one. Arctic blast excels in achieving the opposite. Those people they gathered, so totally uninteresting and mediocre! And that awful Australian accent! All in all, don't go and see this dragon. You've seen more of those absolutely annoying productions, haven't you? This surely is one of them, and out of the lower regions. Avoid!
